The 79th birthday of the president of the United States, completed on Saturday, ended up in the comedians of talk shows. Jimmy Kimmel from ABC:
“To give you an idea of how old this is, Bill Clinton, remember him? He was president almost 30 years ago, he is now 75.”
And the doctor “says Biden is ‘a healthy, vigorous male.’ Vigorous. Why does every presidential checkup look like a Cialis advertisement?”
Not even those more governing, like Stephen Colbert of CBS, relieved: “I was kind of hoping they found out he has that Benjamin Button disease.”
The strongest reaction came from a relatively independent Fox News commentator, Brit Hume (reproduced above), who questioned whether Biden will finish his term. It is “clearly deteriorating” and “senile”.
CLIMBING
In the headline of Russian Argumenty i Fakty, American strategic bombers carried out “nuclear attack trials” on the Russian border. And on CNN, “US is considering sending more weapons to Ukraine.”
In the background, at Kommersant financier, Biden ordered new sanctions on the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, which links Russia to Germany.
HOW TO AVOID WAR
The New York Times kept at the top of the page the article “The West Must Stop Buying This Conspiracy Theory About Russia” by a member of the European Council on Foreign Relations. In short, “read errors are dangerous”.
In Politico, an academic from the American Rand Corporation also warned, writing that “to avoid war, persuading Ukraine to take steps to implement its obligations under the Minsk 2 agreement, negotiated six years ago, may be our best hope.”
LULA OR BOLSONARO
Lula’s announced tour of “United States and the Americas” is already reported in Argentina, by Ámbito Financiero and others.
And in the US, lobbying in the opposite direction has already begun. The vice president of the Center for Strategic and International Studies published on The Hill website that “Washington seems to be rooting for Lula to be elected, even though he is pro-China.” And he says that “Biden should take advantage of the most pro-American government in recent Brazilian history”, calling Bolsonaro right away and asking him to come to the US.
LOCKDOWN ALSO IN THE US?
At the top of the Washington Post home page, citing Covid’s cases up 10% for the week (reproduced above), “US is not on its way to lockdown, says White House.”
The NYT, meanwhile, took online headlines about the economic impact of the restrictions to contain the fourth wave in Europe, where “approximately two-thirds of Europe’s population were vaccinated.”
