US agency requires SpaceX to reduce environmental impact of its rockets

by

The US FAA will require SpaceX to take more than 75 steps to mitigate the environmental impacts of its proposed plan to launch rockets from Boca Chica, Texas.

Billionaire Elon Musk’s space transport company must complete the environmental review before deciding on the launch permit.

After consulting with the US Fish and Wildlife Service, the FAA has decided that there will be earlier notice of releases. The idea is to better manage the State Highway 4 interdiction period during operations. The highway runs through Boca Chica Beach, Texas State Parks and the Lower Rio Grande National Wildlife Refuge.

On public holidays, the highway cannot be closed, and weekend restrictions are limited to a maximum of five weekends, ensuring year-round access to the refuge and park. The FAA will also require real-time notifications when access restrictions begin, end, or are lifted.

Additional measures will be needed to address impacts on fish, wildlife, plants and resources protected by the National Historic Preservation Act. Some examples of these measures include:

  • Continuous monitoring of vegetation and wildlife by a qualified biologist;
  • Guaranteed advance notification to neighboring communities about possible engine noise and sonic booms from launches;
  • Coordinating with state or federal agencies to remove release debris from sensitive habitats;
  • Adjustment of lighting in the launch complex to minimize impact on wildlife.

SpaceX must also meet safety, risk and financial responsibility requirements before a license is issued for any launch activity.
