SumUp in Brazil raises BRL 380 million
The Brazilian unit of SumUp, a financial services platform for small retailers, announced this Thursday that it had received an investment of around BRL 380 million.
In numbers: the contribution is part of a global fundraising 590 million euros (R$ 3.2 billion) from the London-based company, which is now valued at 8 billion euros (R$ 43.5 billion).
SumUp in Brazil: fintech operates in the competitive market for offering services to micro and small companies, with card machines and other payment solutions, digital account, credit offer and even marketplace.
- The company has 800 employees in Brazil and considers the country one of its five most important markets.
why it matters: the contribution becomes even more relevant in the face of the sour scenario for the global startup market.
- This type of investment, riskier, became more selective with the rise in interest rates around the world.
- The scenario has motivated layoffs in series in large Brazilian startups, which seek to adapt to the new reality.
Stock market returns to November 2020
The Ibovespa ended the fifth session in a row below the symbolic 100,000 points, and with the 1.45% drop this Thursday (23), it reached 98,080 points, the lowest level since November 2020.
Reflecting global risk aversion, the dollar rose 1.02%, BRL 5.23.
What explains: emerging market assets continue to feel the reflexes of Jerome Powell’s pronouncement in the US Senate last Wednesday (22).
- The Fed chairman reinforced his commitment to curb inflation and acknowledged the possibility that this monetary tightening could lead the country into a recession.
- This is the case with oil and iron ore, assets linked to Petrobras and Vale, the two largest companies on our Stock Exchange. The Brent-type barrel followed the previous day’s fall and retreated 1.77% at the end of the Brazilian trading session, at US$ 109.76 (R$ 568.85).
Take a break: do robots have feelings?
An internal document produced by a Google artificial intelligence engineer caused quite a stir when it was leaked this week.
He says that a company’s chat system stocked with a large amount of text data has become “sentimental.”
Understand: This term is mainly used in debates about animal ethics to refer to the ability to experience something and develop specific feelings from an experience.
- The engineer, who was placed on paid leave by Google, cited conversations he had with the LaMDA naming system to raise suspicions whether the tool had acquired consciousness.
- For columnist Ronaldo Lemos, however, the answers are nothing more than a probabilistic model of a system that knows exactly which words to choose to answer certain questions.
As robots with feelings should be restricted to science fiction movies, these are some that address the theme:
- “Better Than Us”: In the near future, a divorced man buys a robot to help him take care of his children. Gradually, the android’s behavior becomes human. Russian series one season on Netflix.
