Gasoline inflation makes IBGE seek more money for Census

With the rise in the prices of items such as gasoline and vehicle rental, the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) intends to seek a recomposition for the budget of the Demographic Census 2022.

In a seminar with the participation of the press, the director of research at IBGE, Cimar Azeredo, said this Monday (27) that the agency will seek the Ministry of Economy to try to raise additional resources.

The Census budget was projected at R$ 2.3 billion, but the inflation of items such as fuel forces an increase in the value, according to Azeredo. The start of collecting the survey information is scheduled for August 1st.

“There was a significant increase in gasoline. We budgeted the Census with gasoline at about R$4 [por litro]. So, you’ll have to work to recompose the budget,” said Azeredo.

The director said that the IBGE is “very calm” about releasing more resources. According to Azeredo, the institute had already received a positive signal from the Ministry of Economy at the end of last year. The additional amount that would be needed is still under review.

consulted by Sheetthe Ministry of Economy said that “the Federal Budget Secretariat only manifests itself about budget credits whose proposal has already been formalized and its effects made public”.

Initially, Census operations were estimated at more than R$3 billion. The research would go to the field in 2020, but it was canceled at the time amid restrictions on the movement of people in the pandemic.

In 2021, what ended up making the study unfeasible again was the cut of resources earmarked by the federal government. The amount of R$ 2.3 billion for 2022 was only released after the STF (Supreme Federal Court) was triggered.

The Census is usually done every ten years. The data obtained serve as a basis for a series of public policies and investment decisions by companies.

The information guides, for example, the transfers of the FPM (Fund of Participation of the Municipalities), source of resources for the city halls.
