The MPT (Ministry of Labor) gave Caixa Econômica Federal and former president Pedro Guimarães ten days to provide information about the allegations of sexual harassment.
The notification sent to the bank also asks for explanations about the conduct of the vice president of wholesale, Celso Leonardo Barbosa, considered one of Guimarães’ main allies in the institution.
The notifications were sent this Wednesday (29) by the labor prosecutor Rafael Mondego Figueiredo. The deadline is ten calendar days.
The Public Ministry of Labor demands the manifestation of Caixa “on the complaint that Mr. Pedro Guimarães would practice sexual harassment against female employees” and had known about the practice since 2019, “but would have covered up the facts”.
The MPT also asks for a list of possible accusations made against the former president and the outcome of each of them, in addition to the cases of sexual harassment received internally against any employee since 2019 – the year he took office.
Pedro Guimarães was also personally notified and has ten days to respond. He resigned from the presidency of Caixa on Wednesday and announced his departure in an open letter published on social media.
The labor prosecutor also asks for a position from the bank on vice-president Celso Leonardo Barbosa and any complaints filed internally against him.
“To present a statement about the complaint that Mr. Celso Leonardo Barbosa would cause ‘fear’ to the women who work at the bank, leading to the belief that the harassment complaints would also extend to that manager”, says an excerpt from the notification.
Unionists told the report this Wednesday that there are reports of sexual harassment not only against Pedro Guimarães, but also against vice presidents of the financial institution.
In the letter, Guimarães denies the accusations, says he is the target of “political resentment in an election year” and an avalanche of “misleading news and information”.
“In acting as Caixa’s president, I have always been committed to combating all forms of harassment, repelling any and all forms of violence, in any of its possible configurations.”
In place of Guimarães, enters Daniella Marques, current Secretary of Productivity and Competitiveness of the Economy. The exchange was made official in the Official Gazette earlier this Wednesday night.
The accusation of harassment against Pedro Guimarães is being investigated by the Attorney General’s Office in the Federal District. The case was revealed by the website Metrópoles this Tuesday (28).
The president of the TCU (Union Court of Accounts), Minister Ana Arraes, determined the opening of an inspection to verify the entire policy of preventing and combating sexual harassment at the bank.
