Informed of his loss Dionysis Savvopoulosh Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni made the following statement:

“Greeks mourn the loss of Dionysos Savvopoulos, our greatest songwriter, one of the most influential creators of modern Greece, a free, true creative spirit. For Dionysis Savvopoulos, the absolutely trivial phrase “about a great loss” applies in its entirety. And our words in the face of his contribution not only to our culture, but to our very self-image, are hopelessly poor. Because Dionysus was not only the inspired bard, with the inexhaustible poetic vein, nor the unsurpassed performer. With his music, his lyrics, his stage presence, but also his captivating narrative, live or on paper, he expressed, throughout time, our individual searches, our collective tendencies, but also the upliftment we need. He did not remain, in their expression, as a meteoric and rare creator. He mapped our homeland and its people. He shaped us with his songs, his poetry, his riveting social and political interventions. Perhaps most of all, moving constantly between tradition and modern gaze, he re-introduced us to a familiar form of ourselves and re-invented our tradition, inviting us to the collective Greek celebration, to cyclical dances “and yet as free as rivers,” to reciprocate friends and fellow travelers. In the years that ran in bulk, Savvopoulos gave a unique and indelible shape to time. It is with great sadness that I say goodbye to a Greek creator of his own stature, with words that do not describe either his value or his contribution to the building of New Greece. He will remain, in the century, present. Not only from his exquisite poetic music creation but also from his inexhaustible love for the homeland. I am personally saying goodbye to a valuable friend, a unique person.

To his family, to my dear Aspa, to his children, Cornelius and Romanos and to his grandchildren, to his countless friends, I send my most sincere condolences”
