Podcast: How Planalto tries to save Bolsonaro with fiscal bomb embraced by Congress

by

The Senate approved on Thursday (30) the PEC (Proposed Amendment to the Constitution) that authorizes spending of R$ 41.2 billion outside the ceiling in an election year. The text creates a state of emergency so that President Jair Bolsonaro can open public coffers without running into restrictions of the law – which exist to prevent a candidate from using the public machine.

The package extends Auxílio Brasil payments until the end of this year and eliminates the queue for the program, in addition to doubling the value of Auxílio Gás and creating benefits for truck drivers and taxi drivers.

The PEC was approved with only one vote against and went to the Chamber of Deputies, which should discuss the text this week.

This Monday’s Breakfast (4) explains why the proposal has caused so much concern. Folha reporter Alexa Salomão discusses whether the PEC can alleviate the situation of the poorest Brazilians and analyzes what economic problems these measures can create for those who are elected this year.

The audio program is published on Spotify, Folha’s partner streaming service in the initiative and which specializes in music, podcast and video. You can listen to the episode by clicking above. To access the application just register for free.

Café da Manhã is published from Monday to Friday, always at the beginning of the day. The episode is presented by journalists Daniel Castro, Maurício Meireles and Angela Boldrini, with production by Jéssica Maes and Victor Lacombe. The sound editing is by Laila Mouallem and Thomé Granemann.
