REM are set to reissue their 1982 debut EP ‘Chronic Town’ in August to celebrate its 40th anniversary.

The band’s first EP contained five songs – ‘Wolves, Lower’, ‘Gardening At Night’, ‘Carnival Of Sorts (Boxcars)’, ‘1,000,000’ and ‘Stumble’ – and was originally released on 24 August 1982 as a supplement to of their 1981 debut single ‘Radio Free Europe’.

‘Chronic Town’ will be released on CD, picture disc and cassette on August 19 via IRS/Ume.

It will be the first time the album will be available for purchase as a stand-alone CD, which will feature an insert from original producer Mitch Easter.

“Chronic Town” is the sound of a restless band full of ideas, operating on a post-college budget“, says a press release for the EP.

In September last year, REM frontman Michael Stipe confirmed the band would never reunite, insisting their 2011 split was permanent.
