Gasoline and diesel are stable in the pump for the second week in a row

by

Gasoline and diesel prices were stable at Brazilian service stations for the second week in a row, informed this Friday (26) the ANP (National Agency of Petroleum, Gas and Biofuels).

On the national average, a liter of gasoline was sold this week for R$ 6,748. Diesel came out at R$ 5.366 per liter. Last week, the two products cost, respectively R$ 6.752 and R$ 5.356 per liter.

The stability of prices just over a month after the readjustments also reflects the freezing of reference prices for calculating the ICMS, a measure adopted by the states in October after strong pressure from the government and consumers.

The ICMS value is normally changed every 15 days according to the evolution of pump prices. Without the freeze, the increases from the beginning of the month would be passed on to the tax on the 15th of the month, triggering new price hikes at the pumps.

The last adjustments in the two products were promoted by Petrobras on October 26th. Since then, the transfer to the bombs has exceeded the increases promoted by the state-owned company. For specialists, the difference can be explained by the evolution of the price of biofuels mixed with the two products.

Last week, the price of anhydrous ethanol dropped R$0.05 per liter at mills in São Paulo, but the ANP survey indicates that there was no major impact on the price of gasoline pumps. Ethanol represents 27% of the mixture sold at gas stations.

The price of hydrous ethanol had a slight drop at the pumps, according to the agency. On average, the product was sold at R$ 5.395 per liter in the country, R$ 0.01 below the value in effect the week before.

According to the ANP, the price of cooking gas remained stable last week, at R$ 102.60 per 13-kg cylinder. This Monday (22), President Jair Bolsonaro (no party) signed a law that will guarantee low-income families a subsidy of 50% of the final price of the product.

The price of CNG (natural gas for vehicles) fell 1% last week, to R$ 4.307 per cubic meter, the national average.

The rise in fuel prices is the main factor of inflationary pressure in the country and has been wreaking havoc on the popularity of Bolsonaro, who has repeatedly stated that he wanted to privatize Petrobras so that he would no longer be held responsible for the increases.
