Bank fraud is more common among those who earn more than five minimum wages (R$6,060).
According to a Datafolha survey carried out with residents of the state of São Paulo, the incidence of scams tends to fall according to a person’s income.
Overall, 16% of respondents have already had money diverted from their bank account or suffered some form of fraud. But among those who earn more than ten minimum wages, the number is ten percentage points higher: 26%.
In the group of those who receive between five and ten salaries, 21% claim to have been victims of similar crimes.
In the lower income brackets, the proportion declines. Of people who earn between two and five salaries, for example, 17% have experienced some form of bank fraud. Among respondents who earn less than two salaries, 14% were victims.
Datafolha heard 1,806 people in 61 municipalities in São Paulo, between June 28th and 30th. The margin of error is plus or minus two percentage points.
The research also showed that, even with an increase in cybercrime cases and the greater sophistication of crooks, most people who have been victims of bank account scams have recovered their lost money.
Of those who already had some amount diverted, 57% managed to get the amount back.
