Banks make it easier for trans people to use their social name on credit and debit cards

Transvestites and transsexuals can have their social name on credit and debit cards from some Brazilian banks. Decree No. 8,727, of 2016, guarantees the use of corporate names in federal public administration institutions, municipalities and foundations.

Abecs (Brazilian Association of Credit Card Companies and Services) states that, although there is no law that obliges private entities to use the social name, several card issuers (banks and fintechs) in Brazil make the change.

Of the ten banks consulted by the report, six allow updating with the corporate name on credit and debit cards: Nubank, C6 Bank, Santander, Itaú, Bradesco and Banco Brasil. The other four: Caixa, BMG, Banco Inter and Banco Pan did not respond to the report.

For Symmy Larrat, president of ABGLT (Brazilian Association of Gays, Lesbians, Bisexuals, Transvestites, Transsexuals and Intersex people), having the social name on cards or correspondence avoids embarrassment and encourages qualified and humane treatment for the trans person, but it is still necessary to reduce bureaucracy the service.

“All banks should adopt this policy, facilitate access, including for the procedure to be done by digital means, not having to go to a physical branch, since they almost don’t even exist anymore.”

Symmy tells of his own experience saying that, even after presenting the documentation of the civil name correction, the bank took a long time to make changes to the system. “When I was going to receive a transfer, for example, the person suspected if it was me, because the receipt still showed the name not rectified”, he says.

Nubank says that, in 2016, it was one of the first to include social names on cards in Brazil. All customers who use a corporate name, in accordance with Decree No. 8,727, can request a change of name via phone or chat.

The person responsible for the individual area of ​​C6 Bank, Maxnaum Gutierrez, says that, since the beginning of the bank’s operations, in 2019, already in the opening of an account, carried out by the application, it is possible to update the name either on the card or in other communications. “The person edits in the app and chooses one of the 13 card colors offered. There is also the Rainbow card, whose color symbolizes the initiatives we are building towards respect and diversity for the entire LGBTQIA+ community.”

In cases of change with civil name rectification, the customer needs to contact C6 Bank to make the change in the registration through chat or call. After analyzing the documentation, the deadline for registering the current account is up to five working days.

Banco do Brasil customers can include their corporate name on multiple (credit and debit) and prepaid cards since 2016. The request must be made at the relationship agency, for due evidence. The update extends to mailings sent to the customer.

For situations of rectification in the civil registry, Banco do Brasil says to make the change in its systems, according to the identification document presented by the customer. For benefit cards, the request must be made to the paying agency.

The registration of the corporate name on credit and debit cards is available to Bradesco customers through the service channels or with the support of the relationship manager.

Santander claims to allow the choice of a corporate name when purchasing a debit or credit card, respecting the 19-character limit. If the person is already a customer and wants to change their name, just contact one of the service channels.

Itaú customers can make the change directly in the application. The order can also be made at the call centers or physical branches. The inclusion of the social name applies to products and services, including debit and credit cards, checkbooks, Pix and customer service at the central office. As for the civil name rectification, it is necessary to first change the name at the Federal Revenue Service and then look for a bank service channel.

Caixa allows the use of the social name in the FGTS application (Fundo de Garantia do Tempo de Serviço), but only when the name has already been registered with the Federal Revenue Service. The person needs to go to a Caixa branch with the documentation that allows their identification. After the update, the user ID presented in the FGTS application will be the social name informed by the worker.
