The Ministry of Labor and Welfare has given ten days for municipalities to register taxi drivers eligible to receive the aid provided for in the PEC of billions. The forecast, according to the agency, is that the first batch of the emergency benefit for taxi drivers will be paid on the 16th of August.
The folder sent a letter to city halls, this Thursday (21), requesting information regarding taxi drivers regularly registered with the municipalities.
Mayors will be able to send registration information from next Monday (25). The system will be open to receive data until July 31.
According to the folder, the notifications have already been sent by email and will also be sent by the Post Office.
The submission of taxi drivers’ records by city halls is necessary due to municipal or district competence on the subject. The registered data will be processed by Dataprev (Technology and Information Company of the Federal Government).
Taxi drivers with a valid National Driver’s License and license in force on May 31, 2022 will be considered eligible to receive the aid. The value and number of installments of the benefit to taxi drivers may be adjusted according to the number of beneficiaries registered, respecting the available budget. The PEC provides financial assistance of R$ 2 billion to taxi drivers, effective between July 1 and December 31.
The Minister of Labor and Welfare, José Carlos Oliveira, met with representatives of the National Front of Mayors this Thursday to answer questions and provide more information about the payment of the benefit to taxi drivers.
Aid for truck drivers
According to the government, the first payment of the truck driver allowance is scheduled for August 9. There will be six monthly installments worth R$ 1,000 each. The truck drivers’ registration information was passed on by ANTT (National Land Transport Agency) of the Ministry of Infrastructure and is already being processed by Dataprev to allow payment to drivers considered eligible.
Payment will be possible after approval of the PEC, which contains seven measures. Among them, aid for taxi drivers, creation of a R$ 1,000 voucher for truck drivers, expansion of Auxílio Brasil from R$ 400 to R$ 600 by the end of the year and the doubling of Auxílio Gás to around R$ 120.
In addition, the text provides for the transfer of funds to avoid price increases in public transport, subsidies for ethanol and reinforcement of funds in the food acquisition and donation program. The total cost is estimated at R$ 41.25 billion.
The creation of new programs is prohibited by electoral legislation this year, but the PEC sought to circumvent this restriction even using the recognition of a state of emergency in the country due to the higher price of oil.
The PEC is one of Bolsonaro’s bets to try to improve his performance in polls. Currently, he appears in second place, behind former president Lula.
The PEC was accelerated by the mayor, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), an ally of Bolsonaro. Instead of following the regimental rite of having the admissibility analyzed by the CCJ (Committee on Constitution and Justice) and only then being forwarded to a special commission for analysis of the merits, the text was appended to that of the PEC for biofuels, which had already passed the initial stage and was on special commission.
