SA Panel: US recommends consumers avoid ultraviolet light sterilizers

by

The FDA (the US regulatory agency) has recommended that consumers switch from their ultraviolet sterilizer devices to other safer products.

According to the agency, some of them emit high levels of UVC radiation, which can cause damage to the skin and eyes.

The technique has been used for decades, but ultraviolet light sterilizers gained prominence at the beginning of the pandemic, when demand for products that promised to eliminate the coronavirus in environments and surfaces exploded.

In a statement, the FDA released a list of sterilizers with radiation levels that are unsafe. The responsible manufacturers are Max‐lux Corporation, OttLite Technologies, In My Bathroom, dba IMB, Vanelc, MerchSource, PhonoSoap and Magic UV Light Sanitizer.
