Bolsonaro considers canceling participation in Fiesp debate

by

President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) is considering canceling his participation in a debate promoted by Fiesp (Federation of Industries of the State of São Paulo) scheduled for next Thursday (11), in which his government plan would be discussed, if elected.

The date is the same as the reading of two manifestos at the USP Law School in defense of democracy, one organized by Fiesp itself and with the support of other civil society entities, and another articulated by former students of the university, entitled “Letter to Brazilians and Brazilians in Defense of the Democratic Rule of Law”.

According to advisors, Bolsonaro does not want to go to the “Meeting with Candidates for the Presidency: Priority Guidelines of the Federal Government (2023-2026)”, which has already sabotaged, this Monday (1st), Simone Tebet, MDB candidate for the Planalto, and will receive ex-president Lula (PT) next Tuesday (9).

Initially, the president confirmed his presence for Friday (12), but asked to bring it forward to Thursday (11), the day he has a dinner with businessmen organized by the Esfera Brasil group.

Behind the scenes, however, Fiesp leaders comment that the transfer of the Sabbath was intended to divert attention from reading the manifestos.

The letter organized by former students already has more than 661 thousand signatures. The Fiesp document, in turn, had the support of sectoral entities, such as Febraban, the federation of banks, and representatives of civil society.

The anticipation of the Saturday with Bolsonaro for the 11th, however, does not have the support of the campaign. For her, the representative’s participation could end up being a disaster, because it will be difficult to compete with the magnitude of the demonstration at USP.

The president is still at risk of being the target of demonstrations at the door of his event.

Although a wing around Bolsonaro tries to minimize business support for the pro-democracy letter, most recognize that the signal is not positive for the campaign.

In recent days, members of the chief executive’s re-election team have sought culprits for the broad support for the letter. The first target was Paulo Guedes, Minister of the Economy, who should have dialogue with bankers.

The presidents of Banco do Brasil and Caixa, Fausto Ribeiro and Daniella Marques, were also criticized. One wing of the campaign believes that they should have prevented Febraban from signing the manifesto, even threatening to leave the federation if they joined – which they did not.

The two public banks were out-voted in Febraban and did not adhere to the critical letter to the government.

Regardless of that, the reading now is that, in order to counter the movement and approach the business community again, the president should not try to compete with the USP event. Therefore, allies want Bolsonaro to change the date of the Fiesp event once again.

Bolsonaro was advised by advisors to change this agenda with negative results for his image in the federation for a more positive one.

On the same day, the Ministry of Communications will promote an event in São Paulo with Minister Fábio Faria to talk about the arrival of 5G in the capital.

The service will debut in the largest city in the country this Thursday (4). The president, however, cannot attend due to restrictions imposed by electoral legislation.

Despite not being able to advertise for Bolsonaro with fifth-generation telephony, Faria will defend the service, which arrived in the country thanks to his effort to carry out the auction at the end of last year, contrary to the plans of the operators, who wanted more time to invest. on a new network.

Furthermore, according to the Panel column, from the SheetBolsonaro should also be invited at Fiesp to sign the manifesto in defense of democracy headed by the institution, as other presidential candidates have already done.

Bolsonaro has already told members of his team that, due to its political connotation, he does not intend to sign it – which could cause more damage to the president.

The president’s participation in the Fiesp event is still on the official agenda, according to advisors. The federation said, through its advice, that it had not been informed of a possible cancellation.

Meetings with candidates are being held at Fiesp’s headquarters, and politicians were invited to participate in a dialogue with directors, counselors, unions and members of the entities on proposals for Brazil.

The chief executive criticized the Fiesp manifesto during his live last week, claiming it had political connotations.

“An electoral political note that was unfortunately born at Fiesp in São Paulo. If I didn’t have the political bias in this note, I would sign it. No problem at all”, he said, during his weekly broadcast.

“Clearly it’s against me, which is in favor of the thief, I’m not going to say who that thief is.”

The president of Fiesp, Josué Gomes Monteiro, is the son of José Alencar, vice president of former president Lula during both terms.

This Tuesday (2), Bolsonaro called the person who signed the pro-democracy manifesto organized by USP a “hard-hearted” and “without character”.

“These people who sign this manifesto are blunt, without character, I won’t use other adjectives, because I’m a very polite person,” said the president, in an interview with Rádio Guaíba.

Pro-democracy initiatives gained strength after the president held, on July 18, a meeting with ambassadors stationed in Brasília to expose lies about the polls and the electoral process, repeating arguments already discarded after his exposure in a live last year.

With the electoral calendar approaching, the president has resumed and intensified coup statements and contesting the credibility of the polls.

During the PL national convention in which he was made a candidate for reelection, Bolsonaro called on his supporters to take to the streets “one last time” on September 7 and directed his attacks on ministers of the STF (Supreme Federal Court).

Bolsonaro is 18 points behind former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), according to the latest Datafolha. The current president has 29% of voting intentions, against 47% for the PT.

In 2020, Bolsonaro participated in demonstrations advocating military intervention – the president is an enthusiast of dictatorship and torturers. In the coup-based acts of September 7 of last year, the president threatened the STF and urged disobedience to the court’s decision.
