AADE auditors, using special software, identified suspicious businesses and cross-referenced the bookings from the platforms with the receipts they issued.

Extensive tax evasion was discovered by the audits of the Independent Public Revenue Authority in four hotel and room rental companies in Santorini.

These are cases in which the specific companies did not issue receipts for more than 500 accommodation packages, which were booked through the well-known short-term rental platforms.

AADE auditors, using special software, identified suspicious businesses and cross-referenced the bookings from the platforms with the receipts they issued.

For these four cases alone, they found unissued receipts with a net worth of more than €255,000.

Analytically:

  • A personal company, with the activity of renting apartments, in the year 2021 had not issued 190 receipts, with a net value of 66,671 euros, plus VAT of 8,667 euros.
  • A business, with the provision of hotel services, in the 2016 fiscal year, had not issued 196 receipts, with a net value of 74,750 euros, plus VAT of 9,717 euros.
  • Personal company, with the activity of renting apartments, in the year 2021, had not issued 105 service receipts, net value 21,802 euros, plus VAT 2,834 euros.
  • Personal company, with the object of activity providing hotel services, in the year 2021, had not issued receipts, net value 91,741 euros, plus VAT 11,926 euros.

In the specific cases, the following penalties were imposed:

  • The tax, corresponding to the turnover, which was not declared, plus the corresponding surcharges
  • 50% of the relevant VAT
  • Additional fines up to 2,500 euros

The audit continues in depth in the books of the specific companies, while the AADE auditors have already identified the next audit targets.
