The second manifesto in favor of democracy, which will have the signature of entities, representatives of business sectors and civil society and trade union centrals, reinforces the commitment “to the sovereignty of the Brazilian people expressed by the vote” and the independence between the powers.

Dubbed the “businessmen’s letter”, the document is a response by the entities to the increasing onslaughts of President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) to the electoral process and the Democratic Rule of Law.

The manifesto of the entities in favor of democracy, which should be published this Friday (5th) and to which the Sheet had access, managed to unite unlikely partners, such as Fiesp (Federation of Industries of the State of São Paulo), union centrals (such as CUT, Força Sindical and UGT), Febraban (which represents the banks), the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and the UNE (National Union of Students).

The letter begins by mentioning the symbolic importance of the 200th anniversary of Brazil’s independence, and the entities reiterated their “unavoidable commitment to the sovereignty of the Brazilian people expressed by the vote and exercised in accordance with the Constitution”.

“Our democracy has shown strength in succession. In less than four decades, it has faced deep crises, both economic, with periods of recession and hyperinflation, and political, overcoming these ills through the strength of our institutions”, says another excerpt from the document.

According to the manifesto, democratic stability in the country and respect for the rule of law and development are essential conditions for Brazil to overcome its main challenges. “This is the main meaning of Sete de Setembro this year”, says the document.

For September 7, President Bolsonaro has organized a new act with his supporters, similar to the one that took place last year, when the politician took advantage of the date to make coup speeches and threatened to ignore Supreme Court decisions.

According to the text, the country’s democratic foundations were solid enough to guarantee the stability of governments from different political spectrums.

The document also says that those who sign this act reiterate their unshakable commitment to the institutions and basic rules of the Democratic State of Law, constitutive of the sovereignty of the Brazilian people.

According to the columnist Sheet Reinaldo Azevedo had anticipated in his program on BandNews FM radio, the document gathers at least one hundred signatures.

The manifesto would be published this Thursday, but it was postponed, according to sources, so that the logos of all the entities would count in the document.

On the 26th, Fiesp had already confirmed to the Sheet their participation in the text prepared by the entities, which should be published this Friday in the main newspapers in the country.

The federation should also participate in an event at the USP Law School on August 11, in an act in defense of democracy. The entities are still collecting signatures for the document, which will have civil society organizations as signatories.

The following day, it was the turn of Febraban (Brazilian Federation of Banks) to state in a statement that it would sign the manifesto organized by civil society entities in defense of democracy.

“The Brazilian Federation of Banks (Febraban), within the scope of its internal governance, by majority, decided to subscribe to a document sent to the entity by the Federation of Industries of the State of São Paulo (Fiesp), entitled ‘In Defense of Democracy and Justice’ “, he said in a note at the time.

Just last week, the main trade unions in the country announced that they would also sign the document, bringing together representatives of workers and employers in an unusual way.

This week, President Jair Bolsonaro suspended meetings he would have with businessmen in São Paulo less than two months before the elections and amid increased pressure from the country’s economic elite against speeches of coup content and attacks by the president on the electoral system.

To avoid even greater damage to his image, Bolsonaro canceled a trip to Fiesp and also a dinner with a group of businessmen that he would have on the 11th in the capital of São Paulo, as anticipated by the Mônica Bergamo column.

MANIFESTOS UNITE ENTITIES AND SOCIETY IN DEFENSE OF DEMOCRACY

In addition to the manifesto “In Defense of Democracy and Justice”, which includes Fiesp and Febraban, another document was published on Tuesday (26), organized by former students of the USP Law School, entitled “Letter to Brazilians “.

This published document gathers the signatures of bankers, businessmen, economists, jurists and other representatives of civil society. The “Letter to Brazilians and Brazilians in Defense of the Democratic Rule of Law” has already garnered more than 730,000 supporters.

The two manifestos will be read at ceremonies on August 11, in Largo de São Francisco, where the USP Law School is located.

The first ceremony should have businessmen and other representatives of civil society, at 10 am, in the Salão Nobre, when the manifesto of business entities and associations will be read. In the other, at 11:30 am, the manifesto “Letter to Brazilians” will be read.

“In Defense of Democracy and Justice”

In the year of the bicentennial of Independence, we reiterate our unyielding commitment to the sovereignty of the Brazilian people expressed by the vote and exercised in accordance with the Constitution.

When the centenary took place, the modernists launched, with Semana de 22, a cultural movement that, pointing out ways to an art with Brazilian characteristics, helped to shape a genuinely national identity.

Today, once again, we are encouraged to identify paths that consolidate our journey towards the will of our people, which is the supreme independence that a nation can achieve. Democratic stability, respect for the rule of law and development are essential conditions for Brazil to overcome its main challenges. This is the biggest meaning of the Seventh of September this year.

Our democracy has proven robustness in a row. In less than four decades, it faced deep crises, both economic, with periods of recession and hyperinflation, and political, overcoming these ills by the strength of our institutions.

They were solid enough to guarantee the execution of governments from different political spectrums. Without being shaken by the litanies of those who go beyond the reasonable limits of constructive criticism, it is our institutions that continue to guarantee the civilizing advance of Brazilian society.

It is important that the Powers of the Republic – Executive, Legislative and Judiciary – independently and harmoniously promote the essential changes for the development of Brazil.

Civil society entities and citizens who sign this act highlight the role of the Brazilian Judiciary, in particular the Supreme Federal Court, the ultimate guardian of the Constitution, and the Superior Electoral Court, which has conducted our respected elections with full security, efficiency and integrity. internationally, and to all judges, recognizing its inestimable role, throughout our history, as a power to pacify disagreements and an instance for the protection of fundamental rights.

To all who exercise the noble jurisdictional function in the country, we pay our respects at this moment when destiny demands balance, tolerance, civility and vision of the future.

We want a prosperous, fair and solidary country, guided by the republican principles expressed in the Constitution, to which we all bow, confident in the superior will of democracy. It is strengthened by union, reforming what needs repair, not destroying; adding up hopes for a proud and peaceful Brazil, not subtracting them with slogans and divisions that threaten the desired peace and development.

All those who sign this act reiterate their unshakable commitment to the institutions and basic rules of the Democratic State of Law, constitutive of the sovereignty of the Brazilian people that, on the symbolic date of the foundation of legal courses in Brazil, we are celebrating.
