Panel SA: Acts reinforce resistance to undemocratic gesture, says businessman

by

Businessman Horácio Lafer Piva, who was one of the speakers at the act in defense of democracy at the Faculty of Law at USP, this Thursday (11), considered the result of the demonstrations effective. After the repercussions of the events, at the end of the day, he measured the outcome.

“I want to believe that, if anyone still had doubts about the willingness to face attempts that harm democracy, they dissipated today”, Piva told Panel SA.

Arminio Fraga, who also went to the pulpit, considered it positive. “This is a climate that allows for some optimism. We will continue,” said the former president of the Central Bank after his speech.

Economist Gabriel Galípolo, who went to the USP Law School to watch the pro-democracy letters read, said he was surprised to find the diversity of personalities in the same audience. The event brought together names such as deputy Joice Hasselman, the president of Febraban, Isaac Sidney, former minister Marina Silva and singer Daniela Mercury.

Gallipole claims it looked like one of those dreams in which several people from different backgrounds appear in the same place in an unlikely meeting.

“It was a demonstration of our ability to let go of what is particular, of each one, to defend what belongs to us all, which is our common destiny as a society. And to say enough is enough to the absurd”, says Galípolo, who participates in the Fiesp’s economic council and works in Lula’s group of economic advisors.

The non-partisanship of the acts of this Thursday (11) was the highlight of the event, in the opinion of Denis Mizne, CEO of the Lemann Foundation, who also went to São Francisco to watch the documents read.

“The question is not who will win or who will lose the elections. It’s having elections. It’s continuing to have elections, and the population will continue to have their rights respected,” said Mizne, who is also on the board of Sou da Paz and was president of the Academic Center XI de Agosto in the 1990s.

What draws attention and even excites, according to Mizne, is the meeting of sectors of society to defend democracy. “It’s very exciting to see diverse organizations representing all sectors of society come together in defense of democracy in a non-partisan, cool way,” she says.
