The rate of informality in the labor market varies from less than 30% to more than 60% in the states, according to data released this Friday (12) by the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics).

The indicator measures the percentage of informal workers in relation to the total number of people who are engaged in some type of work.

The states with the highest rates are in the North and Northeast regions, according to data from the second quarter of this year, the most recent period with available statistics.

In Pará, 61.8% of the employed workers were in the informal sector. It is the highest percentage in the country. Then come Maranhão (59.4%), Amazonas (57.7%), Piauí (56.1%) and Bahia (53.1%).

The IBGE takes into account the following informal categories: employees in the private sector without a formal contract, domestic workers without a formal contract, employers without a CNPJ registration, self-employed workers without a CNPJ and auxiliary family workers.

Santa Catarina is the federation unit with the lowest rate of informality. In the second quarter, the local indicator was 27.2%.

São Paulo (31.1%), Federal District (31.2%), Paraná (32.2%) and Rio Grande do Sul (32.8%) follow.

“Informality has characteristics related to economic activities. It is more in commerce, in some services, in construction, and less in industry and services rendered to companies”, said this Friday Adriana Beringuy, coordinator of work and income at IBGE.

“It is the states of the North and Northeast that have a greater incidence in activities of a more informal nature. This has to do with the regional economy”, he amended.

According to her, members of the Southeast, such as São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, have “a greater economic diversity”, which softens the participation of informal workers in the labor market.

In Brazil, the rate was estimated at 40% in the second quarter. The data released by the IBGE are part of the Pnad Contínua (Continuous National Household Sample Survey).

According to the survey, 11 of the 27 units of the federation register rates of informality above 50%. The 11 are in the North and Northeast.
