Energy ministers of the European Union member states will discuss options to contain energy prices including caps on the price of natural gas and emergency lines of credit for energy market participants, according to a document seen by Reuters.

EU energy ministers will meet on September 9 to discuss emergency EU-wide measures to respond to a sharp rise in gas and power prices that is hitting Europe’s industry and raising household bills after Russia cut gas supplies to the EU.

A document seen by Reuters says ministers will consider options including imposing a cap on the price of imported gas, a cap on the price of gas used to generate electricity, or temporarily removing gas-fired power plants from the current rating system of electricity prices in the EU.

Ministers will also consider the offer emergency “pan-European credit line support” for energy market participants, according to the document prepared by the Czech Republic, which holds the rotating EU presidency.

Finland and Sweden announced today that they plan to offer billions of dollars in liquidity guarantees to energy companies.
