Probably at the informal council of energy ministers, on October 11-12, the subject of the ceiling on natural gas will be raised – Extraordinary tax and ceiling on the surplus profits of energy companies
At the disposal of its energy ministers The European Union will put on September 30 the Commission’s new proposals for dealing with the energy crisis.
As announced by the Czech presidency, the new council of energy ministers will be held on the last day of this month, with the aim, this time, of “white smoke” coming out of the meeting and to launch the developments, in order to organize the governments on the new framework and to anticipate the heavy consequences of the coming winter.
According to ERT’s response from Brussels, the draft provides for a set of measures, which, according to the Commission’s estimates, are capable of acting as a “shield” in Vladimir Putin’s hybrid war.
The measures proposed in the draft by Commissionare the following:
1) The imposition of an extraordinary tax of at least 33% on the surplus profits of oil, gas, coal and refining companies.
2) Imposing a ceiling on the profits of electricity producers from Renewable Energy Sources and nuclear plants. The maximum price is proposed to be set at 180 to 200 euros per megawatt hour.
The major issue, however, which was also the subject of dichotomy, is the cap on natural gas. At the previous council, some countries were in favor of the proposal for a cap on Russian natural gas, some others wanted a cap on natural gas in general, and some others opposed the imposition of a cap.
The specific issue is not expected to be discussed at the September 30 emergency council, but will likely be referred to the informal meeting of energy ministers scheduled for October 11-12 in Prague.
