World rice production declines in the 2022/23 harvest, registering the first drop in the last six years. This is because China and India, major producers and consumers, will have smaller harvests. Consumption remains at high levels in these two countries.
On the other hand, Vietnam and Thailand, although with much smaller volumes than the two giants, will obtain larger crops.
The data are from the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture), which forecasts lower world production, higher consumption and, consequently, a reduction in cereal stocks.
The world harvest drops to 508 million tons, while consumption rises to 518 million. China, the biggest producer, will have a crop of 147 million. The previous estimate was 149 million.
India will produce 126.5 million, down from 130 million in the previous crop. This global fall occurs at a time when Brazil will also produce less, but will export more.
Data from Conab (Companhia Nacional do Abastecimento) indicate a harvest of 10.8 million tons in the 2022/23 period, with similar consumption.
From January to August, Brazilian exports reached 1.15 million tons of the product in bark, 67% more than in the first eight months of 2021.
Last month alone, 268,000 tonnes left the country, 135% more than in the same month of the previous year, according to information from Abiarroz (Brazilian Rice Industry Association).
Among the main importers of the Brazilian cereal are Guatemala, Peru, Venezuela, Bolivia and the United States.
A smaller world harvest facilitates Brazilian exports, which can put pressure on domestic prices. At the door of the off-season, the value of a bag in Rio Grande do Sul is close to R$ 76, according to Cepea (Center for Advanced Studies in Applied Economics).
Cane Sugarcane crushing dropped 7% in this harvest, compared to the previous one. Since April, the beginning of the harvest, the mills have processed 366 million tons of sugarcane.
Sugar The data are from Unica (Union of the Sugarcane and Bioenergy Industry) and refer to the center-south of the country. Sugar production drops 11% this year, to 21.8 million tons. Ethanol drops 4% to 17.9 billion liters.
oils The industrial capacity for the production of vegetable oils rose to 67 million tons per year, 4% more than that verified in a 2020 survey.
investments The data are from Abiove (Brazilian Association of Vegetable Oil Industries). From 2020 to 2022, R$ 2.5 billion were invested in the Midwest and Southeast regions in the construction and expansion of new units. In the coming years, another R$ 1 billion will be spent in different regions of the country.
