Amazon said on Wednesday it will add 2.7 gigawatts of clean energy production capacity through dozens of new projects around the globe, including a photovoltaic farm in Brazil.
The announcement of 71 new projects in the renewable segment, now totaling 379, comes amid the retailer’s goal to use 100% renewable energy in business by 2025.
Amazon expects to generate 50,000 GWh (gigawatt-hours) of clean energy through its entire portfolio, the equivalent of powering 4.6 million US homes a year.
New projects include, for example, three large-scale power plants in the Indian state of Rajasthan with a capacity of 420 MW (megawatts), rooftop solar projects in France and Austria and its first solar park in Poland.
Additionally, Amazon announced its first renewable energy project in South America, a 122 MW solar energy farm.
The retailer expects to generate 850 jobs in Brazil during the construction phase of the project, with another 30 permanent jobs when the farm is operational.
The company also stated that the project includes investments of R$ 2 million in environmental programs during the construction of the farm aimed at promoting biodiversity. The location of the farm was not disclosed in the statement.
