Electricity: What we gain from graduated subsidies and how to save energy – Examples

by

In three scales the new system of subsidies from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The benefits and ways to save energy – See detailed examples

Up to 74% the savings for households arrive with the application of subsidies to electricity consumption which was announced yesterday morning by the Minister of Environment and Energy Kostas Skrekas.

Specifically, it will be a subsidy staggered and proportional to consumption. The greater the energy savings, the more the subsidy will increase, while for those on the social tariff, 100% of the increase will be absorbed and they will be subsidized with 485 euros per megawatt hour

The three scales in detail:

  • Up to 500 kilowatt hours we absorb 90% of the increase and this concerns 90% of households in Greece
  • From 501 to 1,000 kilowatt hours we absorb 80% of the increase. If a household reduces by 15% then the subsidy increases by 50 euros per megawatt hour
  • For consumptions over 1,000 kilowatt hours, the absorption is of the order of 70%. And here there is the subsidy of 50 euros for a 15% reduction in consumption compared to 2021.

Examples

According to the relevant calculations from ministry sources:

A household with a waistline monthly consumption 400KWh/month: He would pay without the subsidies 236 euros. With the subsidy, he will eventually pay 62 euros

A household with a waistline monthly consumption 700KWh/month: He would pay without the subsidies 413 euros. With the subsidy he will eventually pay €118 and if he saves 15%, he will pay €108

A household with a waistline monthly consumption 1,200KWh/month: He would pay without the subsidies 708 euros. With the subsidy he will eventually pay 230 euros and if he saves 15%, he will pay 220 euros.

As far as natural gas is concerned, there will be a horizontal subsidy – without income criteria – of 90 euros per thermal megawatt hour.

The 23 proposals of the Ministry of Energy to reduce electricity consumption at home

As of yesterday, all citizens can enter the website of the Ministry of Environment and Energy and find 23 proposals and ideas for saving energy, he stressed Minister Kostas Skrekas, making the announcements on the tiered electricity subsidies

In particular, these proposals provide for:

– Isolation of unused spaces
We close heating bodies and internal doors (if any) leading to corridors or near stairs. Thus, we close the natural air passages, preventing the warm air from escaping through the house.

– Free radiators
The radiators must not be covered, e.g. with covers, or to obstruct their performance by furniture.

– We seal doors and windows
We install insulating tapes or curtains. According to studies (DOE), when drawn, curtains can reduce heat loss from a hot room by up to 10%. We can also put films on windows and balcony doors or only in rooms we don’t use.

– We check the insulating rubber on the doors of refrigerators, freezers and ovens, so that it makes good contact and there is no loss of energy (loss of cooling).

– We limit the time we leave the refrigerator door open
In this way, we minimize the temperature recovery time (loss of cooling, radiator light) with the consequence that the consumption from the operation of the motor is reduced.

– We adjust the thermostat
The cooling system of refrigerators and freezers at a higher temperature.
The water heater at lower temperatures.
The air conditioning (if we leave it on) during the hours of our absence from home at a lower temperature. Also during sleep we can reduce the temperature up to 2 degrees.

– Placing household appliances (e.g. refrigerator, freezer and clothes dryer) away from heating sources.

– We wash our clothes in the washing machine at a low temperature.

– Close devices when in standby mode (stand-by).

– When we are not using the fireplace, the chimney must be closed by its shutter.

– We close our oven 10-15 minutes earlier, before the cooking is finished, as the heat present is sufficient to prepare our food.

– The cookware must fit well in the eyes of the kitchen.

– Wherever possible when cooking we use a pressure cooker.

– We lower the brightness as much as we can on screen devices (eg PCs, TVs).

– Installation of a programmable thermostat
A programmable thermostat allows different temperatures to be preset for different times of the day. A programmable thermostat saves money on both air conditioning and heat.

– Installation of thermostatic valves on radiators
They allow the automatic adjustment of the flow of hot water according to the desired temperature of each room separately. They are placed locally on each radiator individually and they progressively regulate the flow of hot water. Thus each heating body becomes independent and is automatically isolated when the desired temperature is reached, while the rest of the spaces that need heating continue to operate

– Installation of a compensation system in the boiler

– Heating/cooling system maintenance, e.g. boiler, heat pumps, air conditioners

– Installation of a solar water heater

– Replacing devices with high energy efficiency devices based on the energy labeling framework and EnergyStar specifications.

– Replacement of light bulbs with led technology.

– Replacement of the existing frames with new heat-insulating – energy-efficient ones.

– Installation of an energy management system
