Paris, time 11:00, headquarters of Michelin. The General Secretary of the EOT, Dimitris Fragakissigns with him Tommy Maussinhead of Michelin Europe and in the presence of the Minister of Tourism Mr. Vasilis Kikilia and the Greek ambassador Dimitris Zevelaki, the agreement that opens a new chapter for Greek gastronomy and tourism. For the first time, Greece becomes part of the iconic “Michelin Guide”, a guidebook recognizable to travelers around the world for its quality and the international recognition it offers. The agreement includes a broad plan to promote Greek gastronomy internationally through Michelin.

The General Secretary of the EOT Dimitris Fragakis who coordinated the initiative for the last two years, reports from Paris:

“Today’s agreement between EOT and Michelin is a big step for the promotion of Greek gastronomy all over the world. Our collaboration with the most recognizable gastronomy organization internationally creates the conditions for Greece to change gears in this sector. Our country gains another strong advantage in international competition as a 12-month tourist destination.

We have been working on the framework of our cooperation for about two years, under adverse conditions due to the pandemic. We got here with a lot of effort and a lot of work, which is why I want to warmly thank the EOT executives in Greece and France who worked hard, together with the Michelin executives, whom I also have to thank for our good cooperation and wish good job from now on. Finally, I would like to express my warm thanks to the two great Greek chefs who have been honored with Michelin stars: Angelos Lando and Hector Botrini who inspired me to start this endeavor two years ago, in the midst of a harsh pandemic. I thank them from the bottom of my heart.

Greece has all the conditions to play a leading role in the international culinary scene as well. And today I am very proud that we are taking a decisive step in this direction.”

The gastronomy of our country will be shown worldwide as it will be included in the famous guide, with the agreement between Greece and the Michelin group coming at a time when the income from tourism during the month of July exceed by 3.7 billion those of July 2019, but also at the time when French tourists emphatically vote for Greece for their holidays. This summer they recorded approx 1.5 million arrivals since January until mid-September, increased by 23% compared to the year of great success, with destinations such as Crete and the Cyclades dominating.

“Our country is once again experiencing an exceptional year in the field of tourism, and at the same time a new opportunity presents itself: to introduce our guests to the haute gastronomy we have in order to give them one more reason to visit their favorite destination again soon!”

The Minister of Tourism stated that “It goes without saying that when we talk about haute gastronomy, we work with the best of the genre. Within the next two years, Greece will have its own iconic Michelin Guide. Michelin experts research the restaurants of the city and the famous Riviera, and share their experiences on the guide’s websites and social media. We are sure that this project is only the beginning for the promotion of more and more culinary destinations throughout Greece.”

“I sincerely thank the Michelin team for the vote of confidence and I invite you all to spend the next greekend enjoying the excellent cuisine of our country in the Michelin-starred restaurants!”
