The fireplaces and stoves have already been lit in the houses in Nevrokopi, Drama, while the radiators have been burning in the schools and municipal buildings since the beginning of the week.
Winter made its appearance in the region from last Monday, when the mercury too showed just one degree Celsius in Ochyros, being the lowest minimum temperature in the entire country.
“Now it is winter in Nevrokopi and the first official day of winter for us was when the mercury showed one degree Celsius. Until the end of May we will be at these temperatures, so the stove must be lit, there must be fuel to heat the houses”, said the mayor of Kato Nevrokopi to the APE-MPE radio station “Agency 104.9 Fm”. Yannis Kyriakidis.
As Mr. Kyriakidis said, “the cold may be in the dna of the residents, but this year fuel prices are a concern. When the temperature drops to zero in the evening, you can’t help but turn on the heating.” According to the mayor, most of them have given up oil in recent years, due to the cost, and heat with firewood and pellets, while an average family needs about 20 tons of wood to get through the winter.
The mayor of Kato Nevrokopi estimated that due to the increased price of firewood, many citizens will face problems this year. “Last year when we did not have these prices and the social services of the municipality reached a record of granting aid to the needy and financially weak. We ask that the maximum heating allowance be given and that a ceiling be placed on commercial firewood, because the firewood of the forest office will not reach”, he stressed.
By the end of September, the municipal authority plans to gather detailed temperatures from the four meteorological stations in the area and include them in a letter to the Ministry of Finance requesting an increase in the heating allowance. “I’ll tell you just one thing. One in four days of the year the temperature is below zero. Out of the 365 days of the year, about 100 are below zero,” said the mayor.
