Skrekas: Europe is adopting the Greek model of excess revenue recovery in electricity generation

by

Greece, which has been implementing the measure since July, has during this time collected 2.6 billion euros, which financed the subsidies of electricity bills, the Minister of Environment and Energy reminded

The Minister of Environment and Energy, Kostas Skrekas, expressed his satisfaction with the agreement reached today at the Council of Energy Ministers, to impose a maximum limit on the revenues of electricity producers.

The minister noted that in this way “the Greek excess revenue recovery mechanism is adopted by Europe and becomes a European Regulation”, while he reminded that Greece, which has been applying the measure since July has collected during this period 2.6 billion eurosan amount that financed the subsidies of the electricity bills in the last months.

In addition to the limit on producers’ incomes, EU ministers also agreed on mandatory electricity demand reduction measures (according to information, they will concern large consumers in medium and high voltage), as well as for imposition of solidarity contribution from fossil fuel producers.

According to the relevant announcement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Skrekas, during the Council, presented it in detail proposal of the Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis to impose general cap on natural gas. Also during a closed-door morning meeting, Greece, Italy, Spain, Belgium and Poland agreed to submit next week to the European Commission a technical proposal on how the cap would work.

It is recalled that Mr. Skrekas, coming to the Council, said: “Today’s Council of Energy Ministers is taking place at a particularly critical time, as the energy issue is intensifying in Europe, in view of the upcoming difficult winter, which is filling households and businesses with anxiety. Last March, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis sent a letter to President Ursula von der Leyen requesting the imposition of a cap on natural gas. Today, 15 member states support the Greek proposal, the proposal of the Greek Prime Minister and ask the European Commission to submit bold and decisive proposals. I am optimistic that Europe will support and ensure social cohesion in the face of Russia’s military and energy adventurism. However, it is a supreme issue of humanitarian and democratic values, that we all move forward together.”
