Ad. Georgiadis: It is not the government’s intention to reduce store hours

Such a measure would have adverse consequences, the Minister of Development said before his meeting with market representatives

“It is not the government’s intention to reduce shop hours. This possibility is not being discussed, which if applied would have adverse consequences both on the labor market and on the turnover of the shops”.

This was stated by the Minister of Development and Investments, Adonis Georgiadis, before starting his planned meeting with the representatives of supermarkets, department stores and chain stores (SELPE) and traders (ESEE) to discuss the course of inflation and the accuracy.

The minister stated in detail: “The issue of reducing shop hours came from initiatives brought about by various trade associations in the context of saving energy costs

It is not the government’s intention to reduce shop hours. This possibility is not being discussed, which if applied would have adverse consequences on both the labor market and the turnover of the stores. The time of crisis is not a time to cause problems to the workers but it is a time to solve problems to the workers. And the potential savings of an hour or two of retail opening hours will be very small compared to the damage it would cause to the market. Well, there is no such issue. Anyway, if someone wants to work less hours than the working hours, that is his right. Regarding the initiatives of the trade associations on the matter of hours, I want to make it clear that the official hours of the country are a national responsibility and are determined by the Ministry of Development by law.

If a trade association wants to implement a different time for its members, this is not a matter for the state, and neither can penalties be imposed on someone who will work with the national time. It is an agreement between them on a voluntary basis. For the state, the schedule is what we define and it is what applies.”

Controls

As far as inflation is concerned, the minister noted that the whole market knows that there have never been so many checks and added: “we fully understand the pressure on households caused by inflation and the energy crisis. We are here with the representatives of the market to find solutions within the framework of the feasible to relieve our fellow citizens from this crisis.”

Referring to DIMEA’s controls, he said that they are unstoppable – and will continue – while based on the data he presented from April to the end of September, it appears that 3,831 controls have been carried out to prevent the phenomena of profiteering, 283 violations have been found and 397,305 euros have been imposed.
