Papathanasis: “The extension of the operating program of the lignite units does not affect the ligniteization plan”

Information for the youth of Florina around the government’s plans for the Just Developmental Transition of the PE Units of Kozani and Florina, the Deputy Minister of Development and Investments, Nikos Papathanasisin the context of the 1st Conference, on the theme “Metalignitic era and Development, Innovation- Dialogue- Actions”, jointly organized by the Active Youth Group of Florina and Europe Direct of Western Macedonia.

Mr. Papathanasis explained that “global events related to energy issues compel us to continue mining lignite”, while at the same time, as he said, at the top level, through the proposal formulated by the Prime Minister, “we seek to proceed Europe at the ceiling in the price of natural gas”.

He assured that “the extension of the operating program of the lignite units does not affect the plan for ligniteization and the transition of the region to a different economic model”, while he stated that EU levels evaluated “with a positive sign” the progress of the implementation of the DAM (Just Development Transition) plan and found that “our actions are in the right place.”

Mr. Papathanasis made special mention of the case of Ioannina, where an investment in new technology created a positive economic environment, with young scientists remaining in their area, hoping that similar investments will be made in western Macedonia as well, by taking advantage of the additional financial incentives. offered by the Development Law in the lignite areas.

At this point, the Deputy Minister of Development and Investments made reference to companies “that have decided to invest in western Macedonia”, pointing out that “when certain details are finalized and the companies are ready, we will make the relevant announcements”.

At the round table that followed, the head of the Green Fund, Stathis Stathopoulosspoke about the contribution of the Fund and the cooperation that existed with the Active Youth Group in the creation of a Renewable Energy Education Center in Amyntaio and the issue of the creation of an Innovation Center in Florina.

From his side, the managing director of Metavasis SA, Ioannis Boukisspoke about the role that the company has assumed in the implementation of investments “that will change the economic model of the region”.

The member of parliament for Florina of the ND, Ioannis Antoniadis, spoke about the government’s initiatives in western Macedonia, while the member of the SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance, Peti Perka, she referred to the importance her party gives to the new generation, for the recovery of the country.

The senior EU and DG Regional official, Nasos Sofosexpressed his satisfaction with the presence of the youth at the conference and emphasized that “the group of Active Youth is pioneering and pioneering in the issues of de-lignitization”.

“Greece saw the issue of de-lignitization from a very early stage”, emphasized Mr. Sofos, referring to the World Bank study, which began in 2017 with the actions of the previous regional authority and whose main pillars supported the current plan of the Fair Development Transition, when the final delignitization dates were reached.

The deputy governor of Digital Transition spoke about the climate of pessimism which, as he argued, prevails mainly among the young generation, with regard to investments and the next day of the region, Stergios Kianaswhile the rector of the University of Western Macedonia, Theodoros Theodoulidisspoke of the complete absence of the youth of western Macedonia in the consultation on the territorial plans of the SDAM, which is highlighted in the surveys carried out on behalf of the EU.

At the same time, he referred to the pillars of innovation, human resource training and internationalization, through which the University aspires to attract new researchers and create cells of action, around the issues of hydrogen technologies. “Today, our University trains engineers for Germany, we want to change that,” concluded Mr. Theodoulidis.

The president of the Active Youth Group of Florina, Kostas Filippidis, spoke about the work of the Group but also about the fact that in the last ten years, 800 young people from Florina and the neighboring prefectures, with programs “run” by the Group, traveled to Europe, met with their peers, exchanged ideas and opinions for the next day.

“We also want, from our side, to put our own little stone in the young children staying in their place, unfolding their dreams” concluded Filippidis.

The proceedings of the conference are attended by young people from Florina and the wider region of western Macedonia, students from the University of the region as well as children who have participated in youth exchange programs.
