Government promises extra benefit of up to R$500 to taxi drivers amid the election campaign

The Jair Bolsonaro government (PL) will pay an extra installment to taxi drivers who receive the R$ 1,000 aid, created under the justification of helping the category amid the rise in fuel prices. The group is one of the bases of support for the president, who is seeking re-election.

According to preliminary estimates, the extra benefit could reach R$ 500. Payment would be made in December.

The Ministry of Labor and Social Security will also anticipate the payment schedule for this benefit and transfers to truck drivers, another important category aligned with the Chief Executive.

The decision comes at a time when Bolsonaro’s allies are looking for positive news to boost the president’s campaign, which ended the first round in second place, behind former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT). The second round will be held on the 30th.

The payment of the extra installment was reported by the newspaper O Globo and confirmed to Sheet by the Minister of Labor and Welfare, José Carlos Oliveira.

“We are going to reschedule the calendar so that we can calculate and see if there is any remaining funds to pay taxi drivers,” he said.

Assistance to taxi drivers is provided for in the amendment approved based on the PEC (Proposed Amendment to the Constitution) of kindnesses. The text authorizes the transfer of up to R$ 2 billion between July 1 and December 31 of this year to registered drivers in good standing until May 31.

The amount was enough to pay a benefit of R$ 1,000 to up to 330,000 taxi drivers. However, according to the minister, around 300,000 were eligible for government aid.

With that, there would be a surplus of approximately R$ 150 million. As the PEC does not limit the number of installments to be paid, nor does it specify their value, the government’s idea is to use the surplus funds to pay for the extra installment — the measure is seen in the ministry as a more appropriate way out than returning the money. to the National Treasury.

The exact amount of this additional amount is yet to be calculated, but preliminary estimates point to the possibility of transferring around R$500 to taxi drivers covered by the program.

In the case of truck drivers, the government cannot afford an additional payment because the PEC expressly provided that payments would be R$1,000 per month.

As a nod to this audience, the decision was made to bring forward the payment schedule.

Before, the forecast was that the money would fall into the account of taxi drivers and truck drivers on October 22nd. The new schedule brings that date forward to October 18.

The November and December calendar is also being brought forward. Previously, final installments would be paid on November 26 and December 17. Now, the forecast is to make the transfers on November 19 and December 10.

The minister denies electoral interest in the announcement of the measures. “I have thought about this issue a zillion times, but Brazil cannot stop for the electoral issue,” he said. “If you don’t do it now, we’re going to lose money and miss out on a benefit.”

In recent days, several government bodies have taken to the field to announce impact measures for low-income families and women, audiences that have high rates of rejection of Bolsonaro. Categories loyal to the president are also receiving nods.

On Tuesday (4), Caixa announced the anticipation of payments for Auxílio Brasil in October. In a press conference with Caixa’s president, Daniella Marques, and the Minister of Citizenship, Ronaldo Bento, the government also informed that it will include about 500,000 new families in the social program.

On Thursday (6), Caixa once again announced that it intends to start offering the payroll loan to Auxílio Brasil beneficiaries in October, that is, before the second round of the elections. The bank also released an initiative to forgive debts of Brazilian families.

Presented as a launch by Caixa Econômica Federal, the Você no Azul da Caixa program has actually been in existence since 2019, and renegotiates debts that people and companies have with the financial institution. The program offers discounts of up to 90%.

The announcement of the renegotiation, initially made by Bolsonaro, came after Lula, who had already presented a plan to help indebted families, also agreed to consider the proposal of Ciro Gomes (PDT), whose flagship campaign was debt negotiation.

On Wednesday (5), the president issued an act authorizing the Ministry of Justice and Public Security to appoint up to 625 new federal highway police officers — a category that includes Bolsonaro supporters.

The Executive claims that the hiring fits the exception of the electoral law that allows hiring during the campaign period in situations necessary for the “unavoidable operation of essential public services”.
