China says US abuses power with controls on chip exports

by

New US-imposed export controls targeting Chinese chip makers are an abuse of trade measures and designed to maintain the country’s “technological hegemony,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning said on Monday. Saturday (8).

The US government published a broad set of export controls on Friday, including a measure to cut off China’s access to certain microprocessors made anywhere in the world with US equipment.

“The United States will only hurt and isolate itself when its actions backfire,” Mao said in a routine press briefing.

The steps taken by the US country are an attempt to establish dominance over advanced computing and semiconductor technology that are essential to China’s military and economic ambitions.

The package of restrictions is largely designed to slow the progress of Chinese military programs, which use supercomputing to model nuclear explosions, direct hypersonic weapons and establish advanced networks to keep an eye on dissidents and minorities, among other activities.

In an interview with The New York Times, Alan Estevez, Under Secretary of Commerce for Industry and Security, said his office is working to prevent sensitive technologies with military applications from being acquired by China’s military, intelligence and security services.

“The threat environment is always changing, and we are updating our policies today to ensure that we are meeting the challenges presented by the PRC as we continue our contact and coordination with allies and partners,” he said, referring to the People’s Republic of China.
