Vaivém: Food has the biggest increase in nine weeks in São Paulo

After a slack in August and September, food prices rose again this month, reaching the highest rate in nine weeks.

The data are from Fipe (Economic Research Institute Foundation), which points to an acceleration in the prices of processed foods, “in natura” products and food away from home.

Cereals, milk and soy oil, after accelerating in recent months, maintain a downward trend, according to the Fipe survey.

In the last 30 days ended on the 15th of this month, in relation to the same previous period, foodstuffs had an average readjustment of 0.53%.

The biggest increases of the week came from hortifrutis. Fruits were 5.5% more expensive, while vegetables rose 1.6%.

Potatoes, with an increase of 26% in the last 30 days, and onions with a high of 6%, helped to pull the average of the Fipe Consumer Price Index up.

Lower-income consumers have their pockets affected by corn-derived products. Cereal exports accelerated in the second half of the year, pushing prices of derivatives internally.

Cornmeal has increased by 67% in the last 12 months, while corn flour prices have risen by 49%. Wheat flour, still a reflection of cereal increases in the foreign market, accumulates a variation of 35% this year alone.

Among meats, the price of beef stopped falling, as it had in previous weeks. Already the chicken rose, and the pork, due to domestic supply, maintains decline in prices.

firm As in Brazil, beef exports are at high levels in the United States. The volume accumulated until August exceeds by 19% the average of the same period of the last five years, according to Usda.
