Skrekas: Strengthening alliance with Azerbaijan to ensure supply sufficiency

The ministers discussed the deepening of the bilateral cooperation between Greece and Azerbaijan in the field of natural gas, in the context of the European strategy for doubling the capacity of the Southern Corridor

The Minister of Environment and Energy, Kostas Skrekas, met yesterday in Baku with the Minister of Energy of Azerbaijan, Parviz Shahbazov and the Minister of Finance, Samir Sharifov.

The ministers discussed the deepening of the bilateral cooperation between Greece and Azerbaijan in the field of natural gas, in the context of the European strategy for doubling the capacity of the Southern Corridor by 10 billion cubic meters per year, after 2027.

In addition, the Minister of Environment and Energy referred to the importance of the TAP pipeline, which covers 20% of Greece’s needs, with gas from Azerbaijan.

“Azerbaijan is an important and reliable partner for the supply of natural gas, which can significantly contribute to the replacement of part of the imports of Russian natural gas and to the security of Europe’s supply,” said Mr. Skrekas, during the meeting.

In addition, the ministers referred to the importance of the Greek-Bulgarian IGB pipeline for Greece and Southeast Europe, since the country is becoming a gateway for natural gas to the European market.

The Minister of Environment and Energy, Kostas Skrekas, said: “We are strengthening our alliances in the energy field and intensifying our contacts to ensure the country’s supply sufficiency. Our response to Russian instrumentalization of energy is cooperation, mutual progress and solidarity between countries.”

The meeting was also attended by the President of Socar, the country’s largest state-owned energy company, Roshan Nalaf, the CEO of DEPA Emporia, Konstantinos Xifaras, the Executive Director of Commercial Activities of DEPA Emporia, Konstantinos Karagiannakos, the Special Advisor for Energy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Theodoros Tsakiris and the diplomatic advisor of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Vassilis Koniakos.
