More than 140,000 US drivers in total are receiving $60 million (BRL 339.9m) in tips that were illegally withheld by Amazon between 2016 and 2019, said the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) this Tuesday (2).
Earlier this year, the regulatory agency sued the tech giant and its subsidiary, Amazon Logistics, alleging that the company did not fully pay the tips that Amazon Flex program drivers had earned.
Amazon Flex drivers deliver products and food ordered through programs such as Prime Now and Amazon Fresh. The lawsuit alleges that the company withheld drivers’ tips for a period of two and a half years and stopped the practice after learning of the FTC investigation in 2019.
Amazon agreed in February to settle the case and turn over all of the withheld money, the FTC said.
The agency said it will send 139,507 checks and 1,621 payments via PayPal to Amazon Flex drivers. Drivers who have had more than $5 (BRL) held by Amazon will receive the full amount of their retained tips. The highest amount going to a single Amazon Flex driver is over US$28,000 (R$), while the average amount is US$422 (R$), the FTC revealed.
