Bolsonaro government appoints Ilan Goldfajn to run for IDB presidency

by

The Ministry of Economy announced this Monday (24) the official nomination of former Central Bank president Ilan Goldfajn as Brazil’s candidate for the post of president of the IDB (Inter-American Development Bank).

“In a public note, [o ministro da Economia, Paulo] Guedes says that the candidate has a wide and successful professional experience in the public sector, in multilateral organizations and in the private sector, in addition to a solid academic background, which qualify him for the position of president of the institution.

Goldfajn is currently Director of the Western Hemisphere Department of the IMF (International Monetary Fund). He was president of the Brazilian Central Bank between 2016 and 2019, during the government of Michel Temer, and director of Economic Policy at the agency between 2000 and 2003.

The nomination occurs even after friction made public by Guedes. In December last year, the minister directly criticized Goldfajn, who had recently been appointed director of the IMF, an organization with which Guedes has had disagreements.

“[Ilan] He’s a great Brazilian, a good person, all of that. Yesterday criticized us heavy, so I’m returning today. Since we are going to have a Brazilian who knows Brazil a lot and criticizes us well at the IMF, we don’t need to have more here”, said the minister at the time, the same day he announced that he had dismissed the IMF mission in Brazil.

The appointment of Ilan to the IDB by the Jair Bolsonaro (PL) government may face, in addition to a thorny geopolitical scenario, domestic resistance in the event of the eventual election of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), who appears ahead in the race for the second round. .

A victory for former president Lula at the polls would make the scenario more adverse for the current government’s nomination, at a time when more countries in the region are aligned to the left, which can generate resistance to a name presented by Bolsonaro.

Advisers close to Lula told Reuters last week that they preferred elections for the bank, which invests in projects in Latin America and the Caribbean, to take place only next year, so that the Brazilian nomination could reflect choices made by a newly elected government. elected.

The vote for the bank’s command is currently scheduled for November 20th. The election was scheduled after then-IDB President Maurice Claver-Carone was removed from office following a scandal involving an investigation into his relationship with a subordinate.
