Vaivém: Europe becomes more dependent on Brazil this year

by

The combination of Covid, drought, diseases in the animal sector and conflict between Ukraine and Russia has left the European Union more dependent on Brazil.

This is what information from this Wednesday (26) from the bloc’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development shows.

Rising prices and higher volumes of imports kept Brazil at the top of the list of suppliers of food and agricultural products to Europeans. This shows that this is not an expendable market, as some think in clashes with the Europeans.

Of the 96.2 billion euros (R$ 521 billion) spent by the bloc countries from January to July this year, 11.3 billion euros (R$ 61.5 billion) went to pay for products leaving Brazil.

Revenues from Brazilian exports this year yielded 47% more than in the same period last year. With this evolution, they reached 12% of all European spending in this sector. In 2021, it was 10%.

Brazil was at the right time and with a good volume of products to meet the demands of this market in a period of world prices at record levels.

In the country, the high value of the dollar increased the income of producers and exporters.

The greatest demands from Europeans came from products that Brazil had to offer. EU data indicate that the country’s corn purchases rose 492% in June, in values, compared to 2021.

Soybean, soybean meal and oil, products supplied by Brazil, also appreciated strongly in the year, largely due to Ukraine’s difficulties in supplying cereals and vegetable oils to the market.

Coffee, one of the important items in Europe’s import balance, after the crop failure in Brazil, reached record values, burdening Europeans’ pockets and increasing Brazilian revenues.

As with several major food producers, including Brazil, the drought has reduced food production this year in Europe.

The cereal crop drops to 271 million tons, 8% less than the previous one. The biggest drop occurred in corn, whose production fell 24%.

Rice Exports and the off-season begin to give new prices to the cereal. The average value of a bag rose to R$ 80 in Rio Grande do Sul, 3.7% above the price at the end of September, according to Cepea.
