Protesters block Via Dutra and carriers cancel trips

by

Road closures in Rio de Janeiro this Monday (31) are preventing travel and causing inconvenience. The blockades, made by supporters of Jair Bolsonaro (PL), are in protest against the election of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) to the presidency this Sunday (30).

Three of the five interdiction points registered by the PRF (Federal Highway Police) are on the Presidente Dutra highway, which connects Rio to São Paulo. The other two are on BR-101, at Angra dos Reis, and on BR-116, in Teresópolis.

According to the balance sheet of the concessionaire CCR RioSP, with data up to 12:15 pm, the blockade in Barra Mansa continued in both directions of Presidente Dutra.

The company claims that it implemented a contingency operation at km 303 of the track, in Resende (RJ), towards Rio. “Concessionaire’s teams are diverting traffic to the return, preventing the driver who is traveling from being stopped in the congestion caused by the demonstration”, he says in a note.

The PRF says that only in the city there is the involvement of truck drivers and total ban on the lane. In the municipality, there are two blocks, one of them made by people.

In the direction of Rio, there were 18 kilometers of stopped traffic. In the direction of São Paulo, the congestion reached 10 kilometers.

Military Police and PRF were at the scene of the demonstration, according to the concessionaire.

Museologist João Pedro Miranda, 29, was stopped at Dutra for eight hours, due to a protest in Barra Mansa (RJ).

After participating in a work commitment in São Paulo, he was returning to Rio by bus, but he encountered a barrier on the road. “We’ve been here since 5 am,” she says.

In the event of an opening of the lane for buses, he considered returning to the capital of São Paulo and taking a plane back to Rio.

President Dutra’s blockade provokes reflexes even for those who are still far from the point of the demonstration. This is the case of public servant Maria Luiza Cruz, 34.

She spent the weekend in Rio, where she worked as a poll worker in the elections, and was trying to return to São Paulo by bus, where she lives.

The ticket was already purchased for a trip at 7:30 am, but ended up canceled due to the demonstration of truck drivers. “I just canceled my ticket and I’m looking at how much the plane ticket is costing,” he said.

The roadblocks in Angra dos Reis (RJ) and Teresópolis (RJ) are also made by popular people and have a partial ban on the runway. In Queimados (RJ), in the metropolitan region, there is a concentration of people, but without blocking, according to the PRF.

In São Paulo, two points of demonstrations took place on federal highways this Monday (31). The outbreaks occurred at km 51 of BR-153, in São José do Rio Preto, and at km 159 of BR-116, in Jacareí. According to the PRF, the lanes were released in the morning.

The acts of truck drivers, which occur simultaneously in several states, have reports of heated moods and confusion. Also according to the PRF, at 7 am, a case of vandalism against a woman’s car was registered. The PRF did not give further details about the episode.

Ambulances and police cars would have been locked. There are also records of people who got sick on buses stuck in congestion, according to the PRF.

Bus companies that run the route between São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro suspended travel this Monday morning (31).

According to Socicam, the management company of Rodoviária do Tietê, in São Paulo, the cancellation was necessary due to the blockade on Dutra, which prevents the passage of vehicles.

The sale of tickets to the state of Rio de Janeiro was also interrupted indefinitely. Trade in tickets to other destinations continues normally.

Citröen and Peugeot factory in RJ suspends production

The Stellantis automotive hub in Porto Real, Rio de Janeiro, suspended production this Monday morning, as a result of demonstrations that interrupted traffic on the highway that gives access to the industrial complex, preventing the arrival of employees and parts.

The factory, which is located near Dutra, in the region of Resende (RJ), produces engines and cars for the Citroën and Peugeot brands and employs around 1,800 people.

The company says it is ready to resume activities when logistical conditions allow.

Blockages do not affect the arrival of food in São Paulo

Ceagesp (Companhia de Entrepostos e Armazéns Gerais de São Paulo) said the roadblocks did not affect the arrival of fruits, vegetables and other foodstuffs at the São Paulo warehouse in Vila Leopoldina.

“On the morning of this Monday, there were no impacts or reflections of road blocks. Movement and supply continue normal”, said the company, in a note.
