PRF says it works to clear all highways by this Tuesday

by

The general coordinator of communication of the PRF (Federal Highway Police), Cristiano Vasconcellos, said this Monday (31) that the order of the director general is to clear the blocking points as soon as possible, that there was never a contrary determination and that the corporation works to clear all federal highways until this Tuesday (1st).

“At no time did we have the determination not to demobilize the demonstrations. Since the beginning, we have been working tirelessly to clear all the blocked points on federal highways. And the order of our director general is for us to clear all the points as soon as possible possible immediately,” he said.

“We have mobilized our staff even more so that we can demobilize all points. We believe and are working so that tomorrow [terça-feira] don’t have any other places with mobilization”, he added.

Early this Tuesday morning, the PRF reported that 192 demonstrations had been undone.

The statement came after the preliminary decision by the Minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Alexandre de Moraes for the government to immediately adopt “all necessary and sufficient measures” to clear the highways occupied in protest of the election result.

The minister also determined that the director general of the PRF, Silvinei Vasques, be removed from office and arrested in the act for the crime of disobedience if there is “omission and inertia” by the corporation. The decision also includes a fine of BRL 100,000 per hour, starting at midnight on Tuesday.

Asked about the videos in which road police officers claim that they are only going to monitor the situation, Vasconcellos said that, in many places, inspection is carried out by only two or three police officers, and that they would not be able to demobilize protests with about a hundred people without reinforcement. According to him, the conversation takes place, therefore, in a first moment.

“We have many kilometers of highways in Brazil, and many places with a vehicle with two, three police officers, who are the first to arrive at the demonstration point. And the demonstration points sometimes have 100, 150, 200 protesters. there is a way for those police officers to act at that moment. Then, they talk and request the necessary support to carry out the clearance.”

Since the victory of President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), supporters of Jair Bolsonaro (PL), including truck drivers, have blocked or crowded roads in at least 20 states and the Federal District, according to the PRF. Protesters call for a coup.

Moraes stated that there has been “omission and inertia” by the PRF in clearing the roads and determined that the Military Police should also act. The request was made by the CNT (National Confederation of Transport).

The president of the STF, Minister Rosa Weber, scheduled a virtual plenary session of the court for a referendum on Moraes’ decision this Tuesday (1⁰). By the end of the day, the 11 ministers will decide whether to maintain or overturn the determination.
