Passengers at Guarulhos airport, in Greater São Paulo, continue to suffer this Tuesday (1st) the effects of the coup acts that occur throughout the country.
The protesters, who support President Jair Bolsonaro (PL), say they do not recognize the results of the polls, with the election of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) on Sunday (30).
While some passengers stayed overnight in the seats or paid for lounges at the airport to rest, others preferred to risk returning home in one of the few available taxis and waiting for the next available flight.
The airport had 25 flights canceled since the beginning of blockages on access roads to the space on Monday night (31), such as the Hélio Smidt highway, in Guarulhos, which was only released by the PRF at 8:40 am this Tuesday (1st), with the use of pepper spray. Passengers say that companies reported that crews could not reach the airport because of anti-democratic protests.
With the blocks, entrepreneur Victor Marson, 26, who is heading to Rome, was unable to leave the airport for a reserved room in a hotel in the Avenida Paulista region, and had to rent a space for 12 hours in one of the airport’s VIP lounges.
“I waited an hour and a half and a vacancy was released, then I managed to get in. I had to spend another R$ 400 to stay in this room, which had a chair, a cookie and a coffee, not to sleep on the floor”, says Victor. Coming from Maringá (PR), he flies to Italy this Tuesday (1st).
The couple Rita de Cássia Siqueira, 59, and Edvaldo Grande, 72, from Ferraz de Vasconcelos (in Greater São Paulo), preferred to settle in the airport seats so as not to risk missing their flight to New York, where they will spend a month of vacation with friends. They would depart at 21:15 on Monday (31).
“But we are facing everything with gratitude”, says Rita, who saw her husband recover after 50 days hospitalized for Covid in 2020, 25 of them with intubation. “So he, an athlete, and I thought he was at risk for comorbidity”.
A black belt in karate, Edvaldo, a construction technician, is also excited for his first trip after hospitalization and criticizes the undemocratic acts.
“Just see if it was from the other side, from the people who support Lula doing this. We have to accept reality, the guy won”.
Luciana Zogbi, 60, and her husband João Zogbi Filho, 66, would also go to New York on Monday (31) to visit their daughter, son-in-law and two grandchildren, but had to change plans when the flight was cancelled.
“After a long delay and after confirming the flight cancellation, they said ‘if you don’t live in São Paulo, go to the counter. If you live in São Paulo, go to the taxis’. .
Luckier with taxis, systems analyst André Luis Huffenbaecher, 51, who waits in line with his wife, beautician Selma Huffenbaecher, 52, managed to find an available car that took him to a nearby hotel, where he got a room at 4 am
He also passes through New York, but his destination is Los Angeles, where he must spend a few days on vacation. “If the flight leaves at 17:00, the estimated arrival time is at 3:00 on Wednesday [2] in New York, and then it’s another six hours to Los Angeles,” he says.
The couple lives in Indaiatuba, in the interior of São Paulo, and predicted trouble after the election results. “I knew that if Lula won, we would have problems the next day. We caught the demonstration on the Tietê waterfront, but we arrived on time. But the crew didn’t make it”, says André.
