São Paulo PM applies 277 fines against drivers who block roads in coup acts

Actions by the Military Police on São Paulo roads have already resulted in 277 fines for drivers who insist on blocking roads during undemocratic acts across the state. Penalties are worth R$100,000.

According to the SSP (Secretariat of Public Security), until the afternoon of this Wednesday (2), 170 blocking points had been dissolved, 131 highways had been cleared and 235 clearance actions had been carried out by the PM.

Internal data from the corporation point to the use of Civil Disturbances Control, that is, moderate use of force, with gas bombs, rubber bullets or water sprays, to disperse the coup plotters.

The PM was also responsible for escorting 14 vehicles, mainly from companies and essential work bodies, such as the ANP (National Petroleum Agency) and Comgás, and for transporting fuel.

Vehicles that transport materials used in Formula 1 are also being accompanied to Interlagos, in the south of São Paulo. The GP Brazil takes place between the 11th and 13th of November.

As of Thursday afternoon, three people had been detained as a result of the coup demonstrations.

In a statement, the SSP reported that military police cleared the Presidente Castelo Branco highway, one of the roads that remained partially closed.

At the scene, a team from the Shock Battalion used tear and smoke grenades, which cause discomfort in the eyes, in order to disperse the protesters. There was also the use of a water launch truck and an armored vehicle.

The application of fines and the action of the Military Police on the roads was announced this Tuesday (1st) by Governor Rodrigo Garcia (PSDB), after the decision of the Minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Alexandre de Moraes, which allowed the military police to act in clearing blocked highways “regardless of where they occur”, including on federal highways — in charge of the PRF (Federal Highway Police).

According to the minister, there has been “omission and inertia” by the PRF in clearing the roads.

On Monday (31), Moraes had already determined that the federal government should immediately adopt “all necessary and sufficient measures” to clear the highways occupied by Bolsonaristas in protest at the election results.

Since the victory of President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), supporters of Jair Bolsonaro (PL), including truck drivers, have been blocking or crowding roads in states and the Federal District. Protesters call for a coup.
