Bolsonarista stronghold, Santa Catarina concentrates coup blockades

by

A state in which Jair Bolsonaro (PL) received 69.27% of the votes, Santa Catarina is also one of the countries that most faces problems with road blocks due to Bolsonarist acts. According to the local Federal Highway Police (PRF), until the afternoon of this Wednesday (2) there were 35 interdiction points on highways in the state.

As a result, the state is among those most affected by the consequences of undemocratic actions. About 70% of stations are out of fuel, according to the local dealers’ union.

On social networks, many reports of closed posts, including in the capital Florianópolis. Sindipetro-SC says that two supply bases in the state have been reopened and, therefore, expects the supply to begin to resume this Wednesday (2).

Restaurant suppliers, in turn, communicated to establishments that they will not make deliveries that were scheduled for this Thursday (3).

Factories in the state are also with production paralyzed, as a result of the blockages.

The most affected road, at 17:00, was the BR-470, with ten blocking points in about 175 kilometers.

Since dawn, the PRF has been counting on the support of the Military Brigade to disperse protests, in case the protesters do not clear the highways immediately.

On the SC-163 highway, in São Miguel do Oeste, protesters who carried out the blockade sang the national anthem, making a gesture that recalls the Nazi salute “sieg heil”, which means “save the victory”, this Wednesday.

The gesture, used in the 1930s and 1940s by followers of Adolf Hitler (1889-1945) and which became the target of strong criticism on social networks, is already the object of investigation by the State Public Ministry of Santa Catarina.

The agency said it is already working to identify people who made the Nazi-like salute.

The last stretch released in the state, at 5 pm, was the BR-101 in Maracajá, in the south of the state, where there was a partial blockade. The PRF had to use tear gas to disperse the protesters. Earlier, around 15:00, it was also necessary to take action by the Shock Troop to disperse the blockade of the BR-101 in Içara.

Since Monday, 33 blocking points have been dispersed by the PRF as determined by the STF (Supreme Federal Court).

Fetrancesc (Federation of Cargo and Logistics Transport Companies), responsible for more than 20,000 transport companies in Santa Catarina, released a note in which it said it “recognises the right to free expression under the law”, but disapproving of blocks that prevent transport of “basic inputs, for example food, medicines, fuel and supplies for hospitals”.

Also on Monday, in an interview with a TV station, governor-elect Jorginho Mello (PL) said he did not agree with “demonstrations, breakdowns, those things” because he considered that they did not work. He said: “If it would change something, but it won’t change anything. I am a man of peace, I preach peace.”

Jorginho intended to travel this Wednesday and rest until the end of the week, but canceled his schedule to follow the unfolding of the protests.

The governor of SC, Carlos Moisés (Republicans), expressed himself on Twitter saying that the “guarantee of the right to free expression must coexist with the guarantee of the population’s freedom to come and go” and that the state would employ “all legal and necessary” to unlock the bans.

In a note, businessman Luciano Hang, from the Havan stores and electoral cable of Jorginho and Bolsonaro, denied involvement in the demonstrations, but did not repudiate them.

One of the roadblocks that required the use of force to be dispersed took place in front of one of its stores, on the side of the BR-101, in Palhoça. The blockade was in force since Sunday and was dispersed on the morning of this Wednesday (2).

The bans caused damage in different sectors. The government of Santa Catarina had to suspend the distribution of vaccines, and the distribution of supplies for the meals of the state network was harmed.

The Santa Catarina intercity passenger transport companies also canceled the trips on Tuesday (1st) and suspended the sale of tickets to destinations that needed to pass through state roads.
