The EastMed gas pipeline and its importance in the German newspaper Rheinische Post

In the Greek-Italian cooperation for the natural gas pipeline EastMed says a publication of the German newspaper Rheinische Post

“EastMed is the name of the planned natural gas pipeline that could help Europe replace supplies from Russian state company Gazprom,” it said.

“The pipeline it is designed to transport natural gas from the eastern Mediterranean to Italy via Cyprus, Crete and mainland Greece. In this way, countries such as Israel, Lebanon, Egypt and Cyprus would supply the European network with gas from their production areas. Studies indicate that the existing natural gas deposits, as well as those assumed to exist in the eastern Mediterranean, amount to approximately 8,500 billion cubic meters. This would be enough to supply the entire EU with natural gas for about 20 years,” notes RP.

“The management of the project belongs to DEPA’s subsidiary “YAFA – POSEIDON”, in which the Italian Edison participates equally… However, Turkey could block the project. The pipeline would have to cross a sea area that Ankara claims is its economic zone. But behind the objections is hidden the plan of Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan to make his country a corridor for Russian natural gas supplies to Europe.”

“Greece becomes, by definition, the logical point of entry for the energy produced in the Middle East and North Africa” the foreign minister underlined in the meantime Nikos Dendias speaking at the International Conference “EU Policies for the Eastern Mediterranean: Energy and Security” organized by the Jean Monnet European Center of Excellence of the EKPA.

“Let me highlight a key aspect of these projects. They are implemented with full respect for International Law, in particular the International Law of the Sea. The Euro-Asia Interconnector will follow the path of the planned East Med gas pipeline. The Euro-Africa Interconnector will take advantage of the EEZ delimitation agreement between Greece and Egypt. It is our firm commitment that in order to strengthen energy cooperation and ensure energy security, we must adhere to these basic rules,” the foreign minister pointed out.
