The operator announced the start of operation of the floating natural gas tank (FSU) in Revythoussa – The first time that this procedure is carried out in Greek territorial waters

The start of operation of the floating natural gas tank (FSU) installed by DESFA in Revythoussa announced the Operator, with the unloading of the first cargo of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) from the company Mytilineos.

The transfer of the cargo of 140,000 cubic meters of LNG to the FSU leased by DESFA from GASLOG is being completed these days with a ship-to-ship (STS) unloading process from the ship ARCTIC PRINCESS, which sailed into the Gulf of Megaron for this purpose.

It’s about her first time that this procedure is carried out in Greek territorial waterswhile the specific load is intended to cover part of the strategic reserve that must be maintained by power generation units that cannot operate with alternative fuel.

This obligation concerns the period from November 1, 2022 to March 31, 2023, according to the provisions of the Preventive Action Plan approved by RAE.

“The addition of the new floating tank was carried out in record time following close cooperation of DESFA with the Ministry of Environment and Energy, the Ministry of Shipping and Islands Policy, as well as the Energy Regulatory Authority (RAE), with the aim of strengthening the energy sufficiency of the country in view of of this winter and in the light of international developments. The operation of the FSU increases the storage capacity of the Revythoussa station from 225,000 m2. to around 370,000 sq m, i.e. an increase of around 70%”, emphasizes DESFA.

In addition, it offers the facility expanded flexibility in receiving and unloading LNG cargoes, since it is now possible to simultaneously unload (at the Revythoussa jetty and the floating tank) two LNG carriers, thus optimizing the country’s supply chain with liquefied natural gas and securing the required reserves to smoothly supply the market during the coming winter.

The managing director of DESFA, Maria Rita Galli, said: “In this particularly critical period, DESFA has been at the forefront of developments, moving quickly and efficiently, with the implementation of a series of investments to strengthen its infrastructure and further diversification of the country’s sources of supply. The start of the operation of the FSU in Revythoussa with the unloading of the first cargo from Mytilineos is a very important milestone that comes as a result of an exemplary cooperation, under stressful conditions, with the relevant market players and to whom we thank. We are satisfied that through our high technical experience and infrastructure, we are contributing significantly with another infrastructure to ensuring the adequacy of the country’s natural gas supply for the coming winter, while at the same time further strengthening the strategic role that the Revythoussa terminal plays in the wider region of Southeast Europe”.
