Private higher education in Brazil can generate up to R$ 42 billion per month for educational institutions, according to a survey carried out by Geofusion, a market intelligence company, based on data from IBGE and Inep (National Institute of Studies and Research Educational Anísio Teixeira).

According to the company’s projections, 51 million people could consume education in the country in a universe of Brazilians between 20 and 34 years old, the target population for obtaining an undergraduate degree.

Geofusion has already developed reports of this kind for McDonald’s, Santander and Natura.

According to his survey, in São Paulo there are 11 million inhabitants between 20 and 34 years old. In the state, the projection is of R$ 16 billion monthly in spending on education.

Then comes Minas Gerais (5 million people and potential of BRL 4 billion in spending), Rio Grande do Sul (2.7 million people and BRL 3 billion in investments), Rio de Janeiro (3.8 million and R$ 2.4 billion) and Paraná (2.7 million and R$ 2.3 billion).

Rounding out the top 10 are the states of Goiás, Bahia, Distrito Federal, Ceará and Santa Catarina, all of which are projected to spend up to R$2 billion.

Geofusion says that, despite the challenges of higher education in Brazil, the data show fertile ground for the more than 2,000 private universities to expand the base of enrolled students, developing segmented offers and different services by age group.

More recent data from Inep, collected in the 2021 Higher Education Census, show that Brazil has 6.9 million students enrolled in private institutions.
