The employment prospects for Greek employers are optimistic, according to the ManpowerGroup employment prospects survey for the first quarter of 2022.

Specifically, according to the survey, 505 Greek employers record optimistic recruitment prospects in the next quarter from January to March. With 36% of employers expecting an increase in the number of employees, 24% anticipating a reduction and 38% not anticipating any change, the overall employment prospects amount to + 16%. Recruitment prospects increase by 4 percentage points compared to the previous quarter and by 9 percentage points compared to the corresponding quarter of the previous year.

Recruitment planners plan to increase the number of employees in 10 of the 11 sectors of economic activity in Greece for the first quarter of 2022, while a decrease is expected in one sector. Industry / manufacturing is the sector with the best performance in the next quarter, with recruiters recording overall employment prospects at + 33%. Also, strong recruitment intentions are expected in the field of construction and catering, entertainment & hotels, where the prospects amount to + 28% and + 22%, respectively. The weakest market is expected in education, health and public services, with the outlook at + 2%. The largest increases in the number of employees will take place in organizations of size 50-249 employees, with the outlook expected at + 24%.

The results of the research reflect the recovery in the market, comments Charalambos Kazantzidis, CEO of ManpowerGroup Greece, noting that the economy expects GDP growth of 5% in 2022, while unemployment rates are declining. “Nevertheless, the phenomenon of lack of talent remains one of the biggest challenges for Greek employers, for which they will have to focus on designing and implementing a multi-level strategy to identify, attract and retain talent,” he notes.

Additional findings

The survey asked additional questions about the organizations’ expectations for vaccination, as well as for the return of workers to the workplace for the first quarter of 2022.

– Vaccination box

According to the survey findings, globally, two thirds of employers will implement a stricter vaccination strategy for their employees to return to work, while in Greece, almost half of employers are registered (49%). It is followed by 39% of Greek employers which encourages and motivates their employees for vaccination, while 20% will follow a more flexible framework, leaving free choice to employees. Worldwide, the percentages are 33% and 15% respectively. When it comes to comparing industries, 70% primary production, industry / production (70%) and construction (61%) are more likely to apply a stricter vaccination framework. 46% of large Greek companies will encourage vaccination, emphasizing the benefits, without imposing it, offering incentives (eg cash bonuses).

– Working models

Organizations expect their employees in the specialty of finance and accounting with 51% and industry and production (29%) will follow a hybrid model. For Greece, the respective percentages are 49% and 26%. For roles in industry / production, 58% of Greek employers expect a return to business, 51% for customer service roles and 49% for Human Resources (HR). “Roles in IT are more likely to work remotely, with the choice of employers being 15%”.

International comparisons

Based on the seasonally adjusted analysis, the 39,681 employers in the 40 countries and territories that participated in the survey expect an increase in the number of employees in the next quarter.

The strongest recruitment plans for the coming quarter are recorded in Peru, India, Brazil, Ireland and the Netherlands. The weakest recruitment intentions are recorded in Japan, Taiwan, Singapore and the Czech Republic.

The number of employees is expected to increase in all 23 countries of the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region in the next quarter. Compared to the previous quarter, recruitment plans are strengthened in 22 countries and weakened in one. Compared to the same period last year, recruitment intentions are not weakened in any of the countries. The strongest regional recruitment plans are recorded by employers in Ireland, Portugal and the Netherlands, while the weakest forecasts are reported by employers in the Czech Republic and Greece.
