Quoted to head the Ministry of Finance in the future government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), the former mayor of São Paulo, Fernando Haddad, participates this Friday (25) in a meeting with representatives of the main banks in the country.

The lunch is organized annually by Febraban (Brazilian Federation of Banks) and should bring together representatives of the executive committees of banks and authorities.

Haddad will participate in the event representing Lula. The meeting will include a presentation on the current economic situation by the president of the Central Bank, Roberto Campos Neto.

This Thursday, PT senator Jaques Wagner stated that the lack of a name to occupy the Treasury in the future government has been an obstacle to the advancement of the PEC (proposed amendment to the Constitution) of the Transition, which seeks to make room in the Budget for Lula keep your campaign promises.

This Friday, Jaques Wagner will also be in São Paulo to meet with Lula.

With a background in the areas of law, economics and philosophy, Haddad is seen as one of the main names to take over the Ministry of Finance as of January. However, it suffers resistance precisely from the financial market.

The rejection of his name, however, is not unanimous and Haddad’s interlocutors have been intensifying conversations with banks and brokerages, arguing that the former minister has predictability as a quality, which would be positive to trim edges and calm the market.

Behind the scenes, it has also been suggested that, in the ministry, Haddad could adopt a management similar to that adopted by Antonio Palocci during the first Lula government —which would be seen as positive by the market— and more distant from that done later by former minister Guido Mantega, which is strongly rejected by the business community.

Last Thursday (17), after disagreements, Mantega announced his resignation to the transition team, pointing out the intention of opponents to “disturb” and “create difficulties for the new government”.

During the installation of the transitional cabinet, the relationship between the future Lula government and the financial market has not been the most peaceful. Speeches by the president-elect indicating an appreciation of the social and less attention to fiscal responsibility had a bad impact on financial agents and have caused turbulence on the stock exchange.

Last week, for example, Lula said that fiscal responsibility is important, but that investment to improve the economy and well-being in the country is also important.

“We know that we have to be fiscally responsible. We cannot spend more than we earn. But we also know that we can spend to do something profitable, to make the country grow, improve,” said the PT candidate, at an event in Portugal.

In this scenario, the vice president-elect, Geraldo Alckmin (PSB), has taken the opportunity to reiterate that Lula’s previous governments were marked by fiscal responsibility, but that the president-elect cannot fail to emphasize the importance of combating hunger and maintaining the Bolsa Familia (currently Auxílio Brasil) in R$ 600.

Despite the efforts of Alckmin and the PT, the future government has been asked to announce the name of the future Minister of Finance soon.

Haddad, who is a university professor and was defeated in the second round when running for governor of the state of São Paulo, has also been Minister of Education and faced Jair Bolsonaro (PL) replacing Lula in 2018, the year in which the current president was elected. .

Despite being defeated for the Palácio dos Bandeirantes, the petista had a performance considered surprising, leaving the election with political capital and the almost guarantee of occupying a prominent position in the third Lula administration.

In addition to Finance, he is also quoted to lead the Itamaraty or even the Ministry of Planning.

His lunch with the bankers, which will take place in the south zone of São Paulo, should have around 350 guests and will be presented by the president of Febraban, Isaac Sidney.
