Panel SA: Elon Musk’s company does not participate in bidding

by

Starlink, the satellite company of billionaire Elon Musk, the owner of Twitter, did not participate in the public call for the connection of distant schools. The public notice, from RNP (National Research and Teaching Network) was made together with the Ministry of Communications.

According to the folder, the company had already signaled that it would not be able to participate in any type of event before March 2023 and, therefore, did not qualify.

As reported by the Panel SA, companies in the field said that the rules of the notice were directed to Starlink.

That’s because, according to them, the connection speeds required in the call for connections were too high for anyone to act, without charging extra – which would remove them from the game.

In the end, the American Hughes and Viasat, which already operates in the country in partnership with Telebras in the Wifi Brasil project, presented themselves for the dispute.

The promised speeds, however, were the desired minimum –40 Mbps (megabits per second). The government intended to reach 120 Mbps.

It is not yet known how much the bidders will charge to connect schools, especially in the Amazon, at this speed.

In the column, the Minister of Communications, Fábio Faria, vehemently denied any favoritism for Starlink. He said that the idea of the call for bids was to force companies to deliver faster and better quality connections than those already on the market.

According to him, below 40 Mbps connection, there is already an offer in schools.
