Washington: Greece regional hub for energy and digital services

The message that today, Greece is increasingly recognized as a regional hub of digital and energy services, with an emphasis on liquefied gas, was sent by the US Under Secretary of State for Economic Development, Energy and Environment, Jose Fernandez, in a taped message shown on 33rd Greek Economic Summit. “To deal with the energy crisis, Greece is developing into a regional hub for liquefied gas that can potentially meet the needs of Greece, Southeastern Europe, the Balkans, Moldova and Ukraine,” the American deputy secretary emphasized.

Jose Fernatez praised Greece’s policies on the environment, saying it is a leading example, and announced that the US will continue to work with our country on clean energy and sustainability initiatives that bring together the best of American and Greek innovation. “When the US and Greece work together, everyone benefits. Our partnership was built on a remarkable friendship of 200 years, forged in the common struggle for freedom and democratic values,” he added.

In fact, he welcomed the speech of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis at the UN Climate Conference (COP27) held in Egypt. “Kyriakos Mitsotakis underlined the importance of investing in renewable energy sources and strengthening energy interconnectivity,” said Jose Fernandez.

Focusing on bilateral relations, he emphasized that shared values ​​consolidate the Greek-American alliance, as well as the common passion for democracy, innovation, equality, rule of law and self-determination.

He made special reference to the bilateral trade in goods and services, which amounts to more than 6 billion dollars, and emphasized that the Greek-American trade and investment relations are becoming even stronger and the Hellenic-American Chamber of Commerce contributes directly to this. In particular, he referred to the “significant contribution” of the Hellenic-American Chamber of Commerce in strengthening Greek-American relations and noted “We at our embassy in Athens value the cooperation and stable partnership we have developed (with the Chamber). We appreciate the cooperation with the Hellenic-American Chamber to achieve the common goals of regional, energy and economic integration”.

Further, he referred to the “historically difficult geopolitical situation in Europe and worldwide” with Russia’s war against Ukraine which “has caused an unprecedented global crisis in energy and food security”. In this context, he highlighted the role played by Greece, underlining that under the leadership of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the Greek government acted quickly as a reliable and stable ally. In response, he said, Greece has shown tremendous resilience and fortitude in both its public and private sectors, actively contributing to ending this crisis and mitigating its effects. “Shipping has been an important interlocutor in our effort to shape the political approach to continue the flow of goods while we impose sanctions against Russia for its unprovoked all-out invasion of Ukraine,” he noted.

The US Secretary of State thanked the Greek government for strong leadership in support of Ukraine and for expanding available energy sources for all of Europe. These efforts provide real alternatives and accelerate the transition to renewable energy sources, he added.

Finally, José Fernández congratulated Greece for hosting the International Conference “Our Ocean” in 2024 and for its participation in the Green Shipping Challenge, which started a few weeks ago at COP27.
