Alexandra Sdoukou: Greece is emerging as an important regional LNG hub

“Cooperation relations, in the field of energy, with neighboring countries are deepening”

The possibility of the countries of the Eastern Mediterranean to act as guarantors of energy security in the region and in Europe and to take the lead in the effort to wean off Russian fossil fuels within the framework of the RepowerEU Strategy was pointed out by the Secretary General of Energy and Mineral Resources, Alexandra Sdoukouat the 8th Ministerial Meeting of the Eastern Mediterranean Natural Gas Forum (EMGF), held today, Wednesday, in Cairo, under the chairmanship of the Minister of Energy, Trade and Industry of Cyprus, Natasas Pilides.

Mrs. Sdoukou, who represented the Minister of Energy, Kostas Skrekas and was accompanied by Dr. Theodoros Tsakiris, coordinator of International Energy Policy at the minister’s office, pointed out that Greece is emerging as an important regional LNG hub in the region.

In addition, he noted that cooperation relations, in the field of energy, with neighboring countries are being deepened through the promotion of a series of strategic infrastructures such as the Revythoussa and Alexandroupoli regasification terminals and the TAP, IGB and IGNM pipelines as well as the strategically important EastMed pipeline.

Mrs. Sdoukou also emphasized the importance that the decarbonization of the natural gas of the region will have for the protection of the environment, the strengthening of the role of natural gas as a transition fuel and the competitiveness of the natural gas of the Eastern Mediterranean in the global natural gas markets.

As Mrs. Sdoukou mentioned, the gradual reduction with the aim of finally eliminating leaks and methane burning throughout the chain of production, transportation and consumption of natural gas, should be a top priority of the Agency.
