Avatars can be used as a profile picture or sent as one of 36 custom stickers, reflecting different emotions

The avatarsthe customizable virtual characters already available on Facebook and Instagram, officially launches today at WhatsApp.

This means users can create a digital version of themselves from billions of combinations of different hair styles, facial features and clothing.

Avatars can be used as a profile picture or sent as one of 36 custom stickers, reflecting different emotions and actions. These show your cartoon face representing your mood with clapping, winking, thinking, and even tears.

Meta had already extended this feature to Facebook and Instagram, but now WhatsApp users can also enjoy playing with ways to represent themselves without using an actual photo.

It’s important to the company because it represents the early vision of what Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg hopes will eventually lead to a Metaverse, where people can work and play through their own avatars.

The concept is considered the future of the internet and will blur the boundaries between the physical and digital worlds.

The term “metaverse,” coined in the 1992 dystopian novel “Snow Crash,” is used to describe cross-platform shared spaces where the physical and digital worlds converge.

Announcing the introduction of the new feature on WhatsApp, Mark Zuckerberg wrote on Facebook: “We’re bringing avatars to WhatsApp! You can now use your avatar as a sticker in chats. More styles are coming soon to all our apps. Sending an avatar is a quick and fun way to share feelings with friends and family,” the company wrote in a social media post.

Meta avatars are one of a series of virtual characters available across various platforms and messaging apps, including Bitmoji. These characters are now owned by Snap, while both Apple and Samsung also offer avatars in the form of Memoji and AR Emoji, respectively.
