Eletrobras has already managed to get around 2,500 employees to adhere to the PDV (Voluntary Dismissal Plan) (PDV) launched on October 31 and is studying the possibility of a new program in 2023 to reach the number of workers it considers ideal to increase efficiency, a company source told Reuters.
The first PDV of the privatized Eletrobras covered all the companies in the system (Eletrosul, Chesf, Eletronorte and Furnas), with approximately 2,300 workers eligible for the plan, focused on employees retired by the official social security system or those who were about to retire.
Judicial injunctions, however, are barring the PDV in three Furnas bases —Rio de Janeiro, Angra dos Reis and São Paulo—, Eletrobras said recently, adding that it seeks to reverse the decisions involving 345 adhesions in court. For the other companies and other Furnas bases, the POS is maintained in its entirety.
The shutdowns provided for in the PDV, which have an estimated cost of BRL 1 billion, should take place between December of this year and April 2023.
A consultancy has been working with Eletrobras on studies to “optimize” the staff.
“Approximately 2,500 have already signed up for this first PDV, and there is room for another one in May 2023,” said the source with knowledge of the matter, who asked not to be identified.
The second POS can be focused on non-retired employees and will be incorporated within a new organizational structure that is being set up, having greater automation and technology as one of its pillars.
The Eletrobras group currently has around 10,500 employees and would reduce the staff to around 8,000 employees with the company’s first PDV after its privatization.
The second voluntary redundancy plan could involve up to 20% of the remaining staff.
“The reading is that the final and ideal number of the company is between 7,000 and 7,500 employees. For the size of the company, it is not a lot of people. If the company achieves this number, it will be the most efficient in the sector with the lowest cost per megawatt generated and per transmitted megawatt,” the source said.
Sought, the company did not immediately comment on the matter.
